It's interesting though if you check quotes on Bernard Von NotHaus's book "The Liberty Dollar SOLUTION To the Federal Reserve" (some of them are from representatives of authorities) that even some guy from Secret Service said there is nothing problematic with issuing Liberty Dollars. In fact the book claims there are around 40 private currencies in USA, but afaik only NORFEDs were confiscated...

Not to mention how much money some people lost.

I hope that BVNH will survive and one day demand at least some sort of "compensation" for all the suffering caused to him and people involved in NORFED and all the people who bought coins, etc.

Can somebody explain Norfed to a newbie!

I sort of know they were minting coins similar to US legal tender silver coins and got raided (I think?)

    Thanks

A question keeps bugging me and I hope to get some understanding from you guys. The mint was raided in 2007, but a few 2008s had already been shipping, so wouldn't that make anything after that a copy of the original?
Another quick question, but off the topic of rare, how much is a roll of the 2007 copper dollars worth? I see singles on Ebay for around $11 plus with shipping, but I know someone who may have a few rolls in wrapper that I may be able to trade with.

Don't really see the problem here with this comment considering it is a normal comment on almost any forum.

For anyone's information this thread as well as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Dollar have some succinct information. Like anything there are probably 1000s of websites with varying amounts of information but these are all a start.

I love the Norfeds myself, although I am only the owner of a couple of 5oz 2008s. Very nice coin and a shame this was all put to an end!

    In a nutshell.

NORFED was set up as a private currency. An alternative to the Fed's filthy fiat.
Initially Liberty Dollars were issued in certificates but backed by silver & gold, held from memory at the Sunshine mint. Merchants nationwide within America that took on the concept, could use LD as voluntary barter currency for goods & services.

When the 1oz silver rounds came into production, confusion from the public about it being "legal Tender"(From what I read into it) raised the eyebrows of the Fed's ..... That's when shit hit the fan, as I dare say the Fed saw LD as a threat, & did Bernard von NotHaus (The founder) over for counterfeiting. There are many many interesting articles about NORFED on the web if you care to look. ;)
Due to the raids by the FBI quite a few Liberty Dollars have become scarce / rare to find & prices of these rounds have increased dramatically over the years, giving some collectors big $$$ returns :p
