Was talking about buying some 1980s Gold fractional Pandas before... well here they are, finally arrived from Asia Unfortunately I bought these PCGS ones before learning about NGC/NCS, but upon close inspection they look alright to me! Pretty happy with these, here's a picture [the silver Panda is comeaux's present ] I think I'm going to get hooked into these slabbed Pandas...
I think this PCGS snobbery will be over with soon. They are a big mob and recognized well enough. They will be primo slabbed pandas in times to come. I wouldn't worry much about it in the long term
Nothing to do with snobbery dan, just that NGC is the preferred grading company for chinese coins amongst the majority of collectors for a variety of reasons. That being said, a PCGS coin graded at 69 if sent to NGC would get graded at 69 as well. Nice purchase fish
It's not really snobbery, fact is PCGS are not as ahead as NGC in Chinese modern coins (they don't have NCS for example) but seeing these slabs in person makes me believe they are still decent Competition is good. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a PCGS MS69 Modern Chinese Gold Coin at a good price but for Silver I'd prefer NGC purely because their conservation process will fix up most toning and prevent future white spots and their holders are apparently better. Hong Kong.
Ok wrong phrase. The "preference" towards NGC will lessen over time as PCGS catch up and as older panda demand increases further. People will take a MS69 as a MS69. Fishball just attested to something along those lines.
The preference for NGC isn't really in terms of grading standard. Many people (mostly from the American coin collecting market) think PCGS has higher standards. This was probably true at one point in time, btw. The preference for NGC has more to do with the increased care with respect to variety attribution and NGC's tie-in with NCS for conservation.
I feel the same way, when I go to get coins graded (hopefully in the next few months), i will probably use NGC because of the NCS service. That is something that PCGS doesn't offer at the moment (I think).
Oh, I forgot to say. Great coins Fishball. I love the design of the 85 pandas especially! I could happily sit on a stack of them! Dan
That was always my impression - but it's understandable that NGC may have carved out a better name in Chinese coins.
Always a pleasure to have GP comment in the Panda Forum Much appreciated Yep, PCGS has a good reputation all around, though it does seem that NGC has taken the lead in Modern Chinese Coins (at least in China anyway).
Excellent to have GP post in the Panda Forum !!! Maybe comparing gold side by side in the holders gives a better idea. PCGS is well respected, no doubt about that but as has been stated their knowledge of Modern Chinese Coins is lacking. Another thing is in the early days of my collecting, considering both companies had good grading standards therefore looking at the coins of equal grade. Then it came down to presentation. As one member said before, you don't put million dollar masterpiece art in a $5 frame. The same goes for coins and just felt by looking at and holding the PCGS holder that it had a cheap, green, opaque look without a clear edge view. The NGC holder was crystal clear and had a beautiful view of the entire coin. The members at CCF which is a forum dedicated 100% to Chinese Coins felt the same by a margin of 6 to 1. Another issue is that slabbed coins whether it is PCGS or NGC can develop problems after they have been encapsulated. There is no magical trick performed other than grading and encapsulating the coin with either of these companies to prevent them from getting white spots (impurities in the original metal) or toning. What I can say is that once a coin has been NCS conserved problems are less likely to appear on the coin (I have had no issues whatsoever with NCS coins as of yet). I have never experienced white spots but I do not think they can permanently be cured from what I have read and been told. I could be wrong.
Nice! Inspirational as I am just entering into the slabbed panda world. Seeing the different capsules side-by-side was a nice addition.
My favorite design by far out of the 1980s Pandas, it's very cute. I'm sitting on a few OMP ones, they look like a 69 or 70 to me
very nice looking pandas fishball ... I know another home for them if they arent happy there !!! Those gold pandas next to that poor liitle silver panda made it look bad
