Policy on the run or visionary? Pumped hydro could be good. Would only take seconds to bring online.
It will take 5 to 10 years to bring online
Yes, that's right but .......
It also uses 30% more electricity than it generates (relies on pumping the water uphill during off-peak)
hydro is great but it is fundamentally limited on the flattest and driest inhabited continent on the planet.
My read on this is it is better to keep the power stations operating at a fixed level rather than ramping up or down. But obviously there is excess power available during low load times eg night.
Guess the excess storage can either be utilised pumping water uphill for later extraction via turbine (Snowy Mountain scheme expansion), or stored in a large battery pack (like the 1MW one touted for SA).
Have also heard of some places using excess power generation to use compressors to pump air into giant underground voids, which is then utilised like a turbo the following day, to increase burning efficiencies - but figures here again 1.4kW off-peak power required to create 1kW peak power
But as some commentators have suggested, its all well and good having power storage, but if domestic gas availability is limited, then gas prices will continue to skyrocket (as we have already seen), which will put more upward pressure on electricity prices.
Perhaps the PM should be announcing a domestic gas reserve for all of Australia (like WA's 15% restriction), which can come into effect far sooner than the 8 years to get the Snowy scheme upgraded.
I understand that it would be an expensive exercise that will create valuable jobs but will have limited benefit for South Australia energy issues and may be great for east coast voters.
A project that will have benefit to top up demand quickly when needed.
Did the announcerment of this come before or after the SA Premier attacked the Federal Energy Minister?
I'm not usually a fan of Michael Pascoe, but this made me chuckle
Let's see how long it takes the greenies To start picketing about environmental damage, and how it will endanger a native frog no one has ever heard of.
There are losses in every method of storage. I'd rather this style than batteries, especially Li-ion which have a 10 year operating life.
