Hi All, I've got some time on my hands so I thought I'd seek opinions on the grade of this 1927 Parliament Florin. I've read that one of the indicators of a higher grading on a 1927 florin is the three steps being clearly visible on parliament house. Is that right? There is some wear on the sceptres and shell but I don't know how significantly that affects the grading. Here are the thumb links for the full size images (data usage warning to mobile viewers): [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/2355_parliament_house.jpg][/imgz] [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/2355_parliament_house_1.jpg][/imgz] anyway, throw some grading opinions out for discussion
There are some rim nicks, not sure to which extent they will impact grading.. The below has been taken from Cruzis-coins website:
looks gVf to XF to me but it may have been cleaned the colour doesn't look quite right and I think I can make some scratches out. however I am limited by the quality of the pictures and in hand it may seem better. also the wear on the sceptres show that it isn't aUnc. so best case it would hit XF. still a nice coin and one I would welcome into my collection as they quite often sell for melt and I think they are worth more than that
Thanks for the grading opinions guys, much appreciated. I was sifting through a mixed lot I got and I thought it was worth keeping this one out of the 'junk silver' stack. As far as I know it hasn't been cleaned but I can't say for certain
Here's the other side [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/2355_georgivs.jpg][/imgz] Apologies, I had to use the flash for this shot.
traces of lustre and good detail including on the orb, I am going to go with xf overall if not cleaned, we need a better pic or coin in hand to establish that
Hi - as its a commemorative issue - many of the mintage were taken from circulation and put in safe-keeping .. as a result these are commonly found in higher grades, also the usual 3 diamonds and 8 pearls much like the NZ George V effirgy had a much deeper die detailing meaning the detail remained even with circulation - hence people mistakenly thinking they are higher grade when compared to a non-commemorative Australia Geo V florin. Basically its a nice grade and a similar grade in a non-commemorative year would likely be 3 figures, this coin would be very common as a grade in collections so would not likely fetch over $20 imo id put it in the top 15% of 1927 florins i have seen/ own - ie: about 15% of my 1927s are in a similar grade or higher (lately i got a bag of junk else most prior to that were aVF or better 1for1
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1927-Aus...281187767930?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item417818d67a Yours is a similar grade to this, id rather yours as its been allowed to get some toning back after the clean job, the problem is the general coin collectors or devious profit maximisers always talk up the grades.. his one shows obvious signs of a harsh clean with clear wear to the maces and steps.. I think if you overstate the grade on ebay you should be able to get at least $20 like this auction. I believe the coin in this auction is also around gVF as the harsh clean and wear reduce the overall eye appeal.
Thanks 1for1, I'm not looking to sell this one, but I will keep it out of my junk silver stack. It's still a nice looking example to the untrained eye.
Hi, good idea.. I keep all mine that look that nice also. Hopefully they get less common in the future.. I personally think they are a great buy when picked up as a function of spot.. Beats the vanilla 66 round any day of the week
as above VF - aEF,, a few too many rim nicks and bruises on the reverse and its been cleaned. They are still a very beautiful coin.
