While I am happy to remain part of the commonwealth myself it must be discussed. There is talk that should the Queen die that a referendum will be held to determine wether Australia remains part of the monarchy. While the recent royal wedding had many in Australia in a frenzy and I have heard talk that should the throne be passed directly to William a republic may get defeated at a referendum but Charlie may get the ass. That is neither here nor there as this discussion is about what should replace the Queen on the Back of the Aussie coins?
I'll go first. If we become a republic I think that there is no one person that should go on the coin. Instead a nationalistic symbol should replace the Queen. Something that involves the Southern Cross, Ayres Rock and maybe a boomerang. Your thoughts?
May as well just make it an image of Parliament House in Canberra. The design of the $5 note shows that it can be done without being too boring and the 1988 $5 coin looked quite nice (IMHO) so that image could be a decent replacement. [Edit] This one: Source: www.australianstamp.com
So maybe we just steal the coat of arms off the 50c (let's face it the 50c probably only has a couple of decades left anyway) and give the front of the 50c a new face?
Certianly this idea would get my vote - why should every legal tender coin have a 'head'? Bugger kick's it and the mint needs to create new dies...Australian symbolism seems a logical alternative
Different coins, different heads So Captain Cook on the 20c etc - some prominent historical figures from Australian history. That or just put the Coat of Arms and redesign the front of the 50c. Do republics keep their Coat of Arms?
The US has one so I would guess that we would after any symbols that refer to the commonwealth or queen are removed?
That Imperialist mass murderer and land thief Captain Cook, I thought you were still apologising to the original australians, Capt Cook would be a step backwards. I saw a couple of bumper stickers the other day that captured the Aussie Spirit and would make good coins, one had the outline of Australia with the words "F**K OFF We're Full", the other one said "Speak English or F**K OFF" I think you could make a set of all the State Mottos, obviously those two are part of the Qld state motto. The Coat of arms is pretty cool, but a Kangaroo and a big Chicken are hardly a match for all the great Coats of Arms with Lions, Dragons, Unicorns, Double Headed Eagles Etc. ( I may have imagined some of those but I have definitely seen lions holding swords, and two headed eagles holding weapons) If we could toughen up the Coat of Arms I would be all for that. Definitly avoid all historical figures, no one was perfect and no one will agree on all the choices. All we need is for one of them to be outed as a pervert and we would have to recal the whole series. I say set a standard weight and measure of gold or silver or copper and then let every mint, village, city and chain store produce their own currency, as long as it complies with the standards. They can all produce their own banknotes providing they can back them with warehoused gold, and none of this fractional reserve rubbish either, full backing. They can then sell their currency at what ever price they set and people can chose to go with who ever gives them the best deal, a bit of free enterprise and competition would do the world of good. Plus we would get a lot of different designs to stack and it would encourage local businesses (e.g. the local greengrocer gives you 5% off when you pay with their currency) Other than that what do you really need on a coin? A denomination, the name of the country, everything else is just filler, still can't se why you even need the year on it. let alone a head.
Maybe we could convince Ron Paul to come and live here lol, i cant believe not atleast 1 politician here thinks like him, not that i know of anyway
I say the coat of arms should replace the Queens head if we were to become a republic. Just find something else to put on the 50c piece. There is no crown on the Coat of Arms, so there would be no need to change it. Edit: There actually IS a crown over the southern cross in the shield.... I should know I have it on my back.... rookie error.
