37 grams of Victorian magnificence. Not found by me. :(

Bastard who found it is a top bloke and a kick-arse Gold detectorist. It is his largest ever find and sadly, for the rest of mankind, will never be for sale.

    Thanks EM,

what do you think the purity of this would be? Is it 37g gold + rock (quartz?) or total.

When selling/buying nuggets do you pay at a gold rate for total or is it just pure portion?

Was 39 grams when found. 37 grams total weight after cleaning with water and toothbrush. Quartz and other rock would be less than 1 gram of the total weight. This is a Gold Nugget with small bits of quartz attached, not a large piece of quartz with small bits of Gold attached (like I usually find.)

The person who found it would also like to know the gold purity. He's looking to get it XRF tested sometime. I will take a punt and say that its over 96% gold purity.

The value of Gold Nuggets is a very subjective subject.

Size, shape, appearence, inclusions, purity and rarity can all influence the value of Nuggets and Specimens. Also the area where a Nugget was originally found is something I like to know.

Didnt find this one either :( .....

Every time a FRIGGEN HUGE NUGGET like this is reported in the media its value is guesstimated at whatever prevailing spot price is. Totally missleading as to actual value.

177oz = 5500 grams = 5.5kg = one of the LARGEST AND RAREST Nuggets STILL IN EXISTENCE.

Double spot would be the minimum starting price for the owner.....assuming that it's for sale.

That last one has me reconsidering my apprehension at the asking price of a GPX5000 0.0 , the old timers didn't get it all :)

Most detectors would have found this target... 5.5kg at 60 cm. It would sound as loud and obvious as a Car door.

The 37 grammer in my original post was around 60cm down and found with a GPX4000. Dunno if many other detectors(apart from 4500 or a 5000) would get that one.

True, it's a matter of walking over it as well as having the right gear in your hands. My concern when looking at detectors is a split between the GPX 5000 being the benchmark (but Coden certainly charge for it), the cheaper Whites TDI Pro Oz but how much performance is sacrificed in comparison and well whatever else lies just around the corner (be it a new ML model or someone elses).

Honestly, I'm finding trying to choose a metal detector more difficult than the work designing and assembling PCs and home servers. :|

edit: Apologies for the topic deviation.

2nd edit: Some more awesome vid footage was just on the local WIN news, hopefully someone snapped a recording of it :D

The GPX series is the benchmark....all 3 models. Only guessing, but I reckon the next ML will be a 5000 with a GPS and maybe a visual display like the new CTX3030 vlf they released a few months ago added and retail will be around $7000.

Dead set, I'd probably have a heart attack on the spot if I found that 5kg Eureka Nugget.

There is a Casino Hotel in Las Vegas named the Golden Nugget. The actual nugget (on public display) is named 'The Hand of Faith', it weighs approximately 875 Troy ounces (27.21kg). It sold for an (estimated) 1 million US dollars...in the early 80s, when gold was under USD$500/Troy Ounce.

It was supposed to sell for $2mill.

The Casino owners paid $200 000 deposit and were to pay the balance of 1.8 million on arrival. When the owners got to the states they were given a cheque for $1 million and told "That's all you're getting, bugger off." Casinos were pretty organised back then if you know what I mean so the owner took the money and buggered off.
