I'm new to the PM game and only started out this year really. I have managed to get the lunar series 2 coins (I'm collecting the proof 1 oz coins to put away as a set to give to my son when he turns 18 - about 16 years from now) but as I've been looking around (here and the bay) I have decided I really want to get a full set of lunar series 1.

I've seen the series 1 bullion coins going for a pretty big numismatic premium and don't want to think about what the special series 1 coins would go for (I don't even know if there are any proofs or coloured??). My question to the guru's - how much should I be paying for a standard 1oz lunar series bullion coin? Are there many people here who have them and want to sell?

    List below for easy reference

    1999 Rabbit - $
    2000 Dragon - $
    2001 Snake - $
    2002 Horse - $
    2003 Goat - $
    2004 Monkey - $
    2005 Rooster - $
    2006 Dog - $
    2007 Pig - $
    2008 Rat - $
    2009 Ox - $
    2010 Tiger - $

    Thanks chums

I also wasn't sure whether to put this here in a trading wanted thread because depending on the price, I may not want them ;-) If admin want to delete or move please do.

I know the Dragon proof goes for well over $200 +, snake and horse are probably the next highest. One of the other guys will give you a better idea, mintage numbers vary a lot to on some of the coins driving up there prices.

I have had a look at eBay at the completed auctions and couldn't really find much - only 1 or 2 auctions which is why I asked here. Just to avoid confusion, I'm looking at the bullion not proof versions.

    Cheers

Why did you go into PM's in the first place?
If it is for collectibles purposes, okay, go ahead, though this is quickly gonna become a very expensive hobby, lol.
But if it's as investment or combination of investment/collectibles, since you said you're new in PM's, I would say that it's better to first use the dollars/whatever fiatcurrency to accumulate a good weight silver at the lowest found price, and only then start looking for collectibles.
Because otherwise, during economical hay, you might end up having to sell/exchange your collectibles at whatever current market price.

I've seen this written as advise to a lot of new members and understand exactly where you're coming from. TBH it is actually more of a hobby and I would say I'm a collector rather than a stacker - it is fast becoming an expensive hobby :) You can never say never but I'm pretty solid and can't forsee a situation where the collectibles would have to go at a time I didn't want to sell. The sets are mainly being put together to give to my children when they turn 18 and 21 (they are only toddlers atm so hopefully they'll be pretty valuable by then).

After reading here over the last few months (as well as doing other research and weighing up other investments) I've decided to put aside enough to accumulate around 20 oz a month in bars - if a couple of spec shares do well then maybe more in a couple of months :). I'll put aside fiat and buy on the dips but pretty much accumlate all the way to $80 an oz - that'll be about time to get out for me.

In saying all of that - and I'm sure it's around in another thread if I look - what are the most easily tradeable 10 oz bars that give the best oz for dollar?

It seems Perth Mint bars - while not stacking as nicely as Southern Cross or some of the others are pretty good in thast regard? Opinions?

@ Blockhead - Interesting about those mintages - the Dragon being the biggest but also probably the most expensive to buy now.

2500 on proof was the mintage limit like the 300,000 on the bullion.
You posted the mintage limit on proof and the actual mintage on bullion coins
The actual mintage on 1 oz proof coins are

Well, I've got a '2009 year of the ox' proof coin that I picked up at a jewellers but with no box or certificate, just in the airtight capsule it comes in.

How much do you think it's worth??

Well I only paid $28 for it about 6 months ago which was bullion price at the time, I thought I'd snatched myself a great deal!!
