Given that it looks like the WuFlu is going to break out in QLD and travel around the country and the prep buying has already begun a little I was wondering when the day that the real panic buying really fires up will arrive. I would not be surprised if we start hearing about a ramping up of cases in Australia in the next week or so and people decide that it's inevitable that it will reach every state and city. The media has been fairly quiet but they won't be able to contain their "fear sells" instincts and once one outlet does it they will all compete to outdo each other.

I went to Woolworths today and just about every shopping cart that I saw had lots of toilet rolls and the shelves in that section were somewhat bare. The dude at the checkout said that he started noticing shelves of various items having much less stock than usual about 6 days ago.

What do you think? Will it never happen, will it take off in the next weeK? I would be interested in what you guys think about when the penny will drop.

Got a source for your comment about QLD breaking out?

I was seriously considering making a trip to Costco tomorrow but I have a bit going on.

Edit : The above is in the US, but like you I expect similar scenes in Australia shortly.

I seen a lady loading up on condoms and panadol
She literally grabbed several cartons of each (each carton containing several 10 packs)

    I commented.
"gee.. she must be getting plenty of action and her partner can't pull the old headache excuse!"

Apparently, as a person who restocks the specials stand by the checkouts, she was really offended.

    If looks could kill ;)

Thanks Shaddam. That's one of the signals I was hoping I wouldn't see.

That is a classic call Number 47. Totally worth the dirty look.

Honestly I expected it to start by this weekend, so I stocked up on 2 weeks worth of non- perishables on Thursday.

The girl at the checkout must have thought I just like pasta, rice and tin food a lot.... Lol.

Edit : Now we've had our first death, I expect fear to start ramping up this week.

It was one of those moments, if I'd let it pass without saying anything, I'd never get the opportunity again...

Seeing her standing there, arms full of condoms and panadol, giving me the dirty look is etched into my mind ... that image might come in handy one day.

As far as shopping goes, Personally I bought extra dunny paper and rice in preparation for my next ring burner curry cookup.

I always keep PLENTY of extra food in my pantry, I could go 2 months easy without leaving the house. Mainly because there's no local supermarket, secondly because you never know what's around the corner, it could be a broken leg or a full blown zombie apocalypse.

Doesn't seem to be any panic buying in Sydney atm. I've been to a few Coles and Woolworths to check, but there doesn't seems to be any shortages.

I don't even see Chinese people wearing face mask anymore, no one seems to care over here anymore.

I'm always puzzled by the headlong charge into the Toilet Paper aisle whenever an emergency is mentioned.

    I've been wondering this too.
I've been very surprised at the lack of cases here, it's been near dormant for many weeks now. Lots of local talk and news about prepping, even from the mainstream media, so it feels like it's about to go mainstream.
If the new cases hold off here we might avoid it, but say a doubling in week might be enough to trigger it.
I'd a say panic buying is maybe 80% likely to happen, we've already seen it with hand sanitiser and masks, they were completely sold out weeks ago everywhere in the country, both in stores and online.
I just noticed new stock of P2/N95 masks in Bunnings 4-5 days ago, prominent display as you walked in, now sold out again I think.

You pop a roll into a pot with some water and a pinch of salt and bring it to the boil while stirring until it’s nicely mushy and then serve it in bowls with milk, brown sugar and whatever else you want to put on top.

At a pinch, Methylated Spirits will do but a tad harsh on the skin over time.

That happened at the end of January at all supermarkets and chemists, was almost impossible to get them. Sales of isopropyl alcohol also spiked.
