Thanks for this. It is interesting.

These people talk of “patient rounds”. You can tell by the way this article is written it is not by people scientifically trained to report in a globally accepted standard for scientific research.

In the case of this virus, since there is no treatment, you can’t complain too much, even if it is as raw as this. Unfortunately, there are no objective parameters to delineate severity of illness that would be familiar to people outside of TCM other than the presence of respiratory distress or not (this is not even more than what looks like just a lay observation), with other descriptors limited to basic bedside qualitative TCM observations of tongues, types of pulses in TCM and also incontinence or fatigued expressions (ie sick).

There are two TCM formulations described - ”decoction” and ”granules”. Already, that introduces a variable. It does not seem the study stratified into decoction and granule arms. It is really notable that the contents of the decoction and granules are not mentioned.

“The following is reported in the patient wards under the responsibility of Guandong Provincial TCM Hospital:

Patient Rounds: The severity of patient conditions was unexpected, and the entire ward was more or less quiet as these patients were so weak, that it seemed that they did not even have the energy to moan. Most of the patients treated were urgently, critically, or severely ill. Many of them had a high fever, a thick tongue coating, slippery and wiry pulses, bowel incontinence, and little to no expression on their faces (perhaps from extreme fatigue?).

1/30/20 Herbal formulas were administered to patients according to the individual’s TCM pattern diagnoses, as prescribed by Guandong’s experts.

2/1/20 Patient Rounds: Some patients’ fever have been reduced. There were more patients with low-grade fever. By and large, tongue coatings changed from thick and greasy to thin, and patient stools were more formed. Furthermore, these patients now had the energy to speak for up to five sentences before the onset of mild wheezing. Also, in general, coughing was significantly less compared to before. Patients’ self-reports of conditions have improved quite a bit. Patients can now sit up and practice the qigong exercise, Eight Brocade in bed and/or meditate.

As of 2/4/20: Nearly fifty patients in the ward have clearly improved. The effectiveness of Chinese herbal treatments are being actively observed and witnessed in this clinical setting.“

It doesn’t say how many patients there were. Is there 50 out of 50 improved or are we talking 50 out of 100? What happened to anyone who did not improve?

I can say something about another excerpt:

“2/3/20, Eight confirmed patients were discharged from the first ward of the South Building of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital. This represents the first group of patients who were discharged from a hospital using traditional Chinese medicine or a combination of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine. Amongst them, six were female, two were male. Of these, six were severe and two were mild cases. The age range of the patients was from twenty-six to sixty-eight”

You see what the authors highlighted.

I think the highlight is this:
Amongst them, six were female, two were male. Of these, six were severe and two were mild cases. The age range of the patients was from twenty-six to sixty-eight

We already know that people under 70, no matter what, hardly die at all with this infection. It is people above 70 and especially 80 who die, also those with comorbid cardiovascular disease, diabetes and to a lesser extent respiratory disease.

This is the whole point of placebo controlled trials

People may get better anyway no matter what treatment they are given because the treatment is no better than placebo

This article unfortunately a lost opportunity to trial TCM against placebo.

I should also add, the authors don’t even describe what’s in the magic sauce. Shonky!!!!

Initial Thoughts on Coronavirus Prevention and Treatment with Chinese Medicine

“Coronavirus should be thought of as a damp type of epidemic. The pathogens linger and are difficult to dissipate completely. This disease is different from wind-heat accompanied by dampness, a situation where the heat will clear automatically as soon as the dampness is resolved, leading to the swift and full recovery of the patient. Damp toxicity, on the other hand, lingers and clings to the sick person like “oil mixed into flour”. When choosing a course of treatment, therefore, practitioners must be very careful not to mistake damp toxicity transforming into heat with heat toxicity accompanied by dampness. The herbs that should be used for these two situations are very different.

Coronavirus’ main etiology appears to be damp toxicity, not heat toxicity accompanied by dampness. When treating heat toxicity accompanied by dampness, the strategy is usually to clear heat, resolve toxins and dispel dampness. When encountering damp toxicity that transforms into heat or recalcitrant damp heat toxins, however, you should not use the familiar method of clearing heat and resolving toxicity—using cold herbs too early will inevitably exacerbate the dampness in this case and lead to cold enveloping heat . . . a move that will produce adverse effects in treatment outcomes. When treating this disease, therefore, the focus should be on resolving turbidity with aromatic herbs, thus outthrusting the surface and regulating the up-down dynamics of the Spleen/Stomach network. As this particular type of dampness becomes resolved, stagnant heat will be able to disperse and toxins will be not be able to form, thus leading to a gradual resolution of symptoms.”
