Submitted to me anonymously by a forum member, shared with permission as a warning to others. Homeowner returned from vacation to find their stash gone. That's not a cheap fire safe either - it was a brand-name security safe designed to be torch and drill resistant. At this time it is not known whether this was a targeted robbery or opportunistic, but presumed discovered during a regular break-in, and the crims returned with the tools to crack it open, which they did successfully. Fortunate they still weren't home when the crims returned with the heavy hitting gear, because they wanted in. Motto of the story - don't have a safe at home, be paranoid about information security, get out of the White Pages, get a PO Box, don't upload pictures with EXIF data, even use a bank account with a "trading as" account name not your surname - or stick to face-to-face trades in appropriate locations with CCTV. Don't think that decoys will deter people - these guys returned with oxy-cutting gear to get in once they discovered a safe on the premises. People willing to do that won't be amused if they find they've been dudded with fakes - all you've done is advertised that you thought fake bullion was a good idea. So many people are willing to scare-monger about safe deposit boxes in banks or private companies - but when was the last time you saw that level of safe-cracking happen inside a bank vault in Australia. Houses get robbed all the time. I'm not in possession of any further details to discuss the specifics of this incident further in a public forum.
Just talked the wife into getting a large safe for the house, mostly for cash, documents and jewellery but with room for PMs as well. Fortunately we haven't chosen a brand and Bunnings had nothing decent but we need somewhere for things to be kept.
Holy sheet. Someone has Gorn to some serious effort there. Cmi safes are very good. Someone must of know that it was there and what it stored. Also they must of broken into the house to get the the safe so anything and everything inside a house Could of been taken or damaged. They would of certainly damaged some of the contense in there. That's crazy
I was thinking very seriously about getting a similar safe for home and went with the safety deposit box at the bank instead, seems like a good move. I really feel for the victim here.
the stacks was gone! there was no buuubiiii traped, crazy concrete inside the safe? where is the platinum coating? and titanium safety bars.... the power supply was too convenient too the safe left open too much room for cutting no spy cam ??
Safe Deposite boxes are the way to go in my opinion, I mean if you want a good safe your looking at $X,000s might aswell get a box http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-45664-sneak-peek-inside-custodian-vaults.html
Looks like the work of a 9" grinder to me & an oxy . Also looks like a tradie that done it the cut is very straight .
A safe at home can be fine so long as you reinforce its perimeter with one of these security devices..... ...professionally trained. .
My version of the motto of the story. 1) A few aerosol cans of LPG + smokeless powder stuck to inside walls of the safe will make my day. 2) The spy cams can email me the whole circus so I can watch it over and over again for amusement. 3) The metal won't have been anywhere near my place anyway. 4) If you don't have some mongrel in you, invest in super instead
Sorry to digress, but this oddly reminds me of a movie "Street Thief" about a guy trying to break into a safe. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0872224/reviews
Just one of these should suffice as back up protection. I have seen them in the flesh, and whilst a pit bull would do serious damage, a Boerboel would eat it! We actually looked at them with intent and spoke to several owners. The story that sticks in my mind, was when an owner told us that he saw one of his dogs taking down a young bull by itself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boerboel
Many years ago while bush walking I found a safe much larger than the one pictured. Had a similar hole in the side. My guess is they transported the safe to the bush, then cut it open where no one could hear. It would have taken some serious lifting gear just to get it there.
