Quick question, would a cook's blowtorch (does reach 1300 degrees C so plenty hot enough) work for this? Just wondering if the gas supply would last long enough and whether using butane would at all de-/un- purify (not sure on correct term) the silver as opposed to other gasses?
Hmmm... like One that cook's burn the top of a creme brulee with? Might not have a large enough flame or a large enough gas supply. My guess is that it would take a very long time to melt down and may not have the power/heat in the flame the keep the molten pool fluid enough to pour well. I don't really know maybe just give it a shot and see how it goes? As for the flame adding impurities I doubt it would, I think it would be more likely to pick up impurities from the Surface that its being melted on. I'm No expert and have little experience in this area, but I Hope this has answered your question a little if anything. =)
Yeah brilliant bit of advice, i wasnt sure about the gas supply lasting but as the flame gets to 1300 degrees c and silvers melting point is less than 1000 i imagine it should work so i may get my hands on a torch and try it thanks (Planning on making some "war medal" style silver pieces) Edit: maybe not "war medals" but something different anyway)
We did, Didn't go so well hahah We make our own granule with a furnace, and one day we decided to try making a 1kg bar and they turned out a little ugly. Most probably because it was a large quantity of silver and it wasn't heated very effectively as it was poured. So I guess the caveat is not to try it with a big bar
Yup the more oz's the harder it is to keep then entire amount molten so it flows evenly and has a nice finish. Could always remake smaller bars from the 1kg bar? What set up did you have? post up a pic of the bar if you still got it??? =P hehe

Didn't do it myself, all I know is that a furnace was used. I think we may have turned them back into granule but I'll see if there are any around... EDIT: None left, sorry. We REALLY didn't like the look of them hahah
That is amazing! Now paint it white and you can hide your stash in the fridge! You may need to reinforce the fridge door though. I used to collect stone eggs, mostly alabaster. Looking back on it, it is a strange thing to collect. I still have a collection of marbles made out of ...marble of different varieties.
