Hi, picked up a bunch of old coins @ a garage sale and found these 2 tokens in the box .. anyone know anything about these? I hope it's ok to post these here. One is Australian and reads: E.WAY & COMPANY , DRAPERS , PITT ST , SYDNEY on one side .. KINDLY DROP US A CARD OR INSPECT OUR COUNTERS FOR WHAT YOU REQUIRE. on the other side The other token is from the UK, and reads: BRITISH COPPER COMPANY , SMELTING WORKS AT LANDORE on one side .. The other side has ROLLING MILLS AT WALTHAMSOWE around the edge , with a LION and ONE PENNY in the centre. I'll try to upload some images. Cheers, Michael
I just realised looking at the image of the UK token that you can see an outline of a date .. looks like 1812. :/
Thanks, I like them Golden ChipMonk. The UK token is a very dark colour in real life , but got washed out by the flash on the camera .. being from a copper company, I would assume copper. The Pitt St token is the colour in the image (no real wash out from the flash). I only very new to all of this , may be bronze ??
Thanks for the link Bull_Bear. LOL .. looks like a cheapie, but wasn't expecting much of a value on it. Still like it, being a part of Australian / Sydney history and all.
It's from the third period of issue of English tokens (the first was in the late 1600's, the next in the 1790's). They were issued because of a lack of small change and were probably given to employees in their pay packets and circulated in the local area. I can see a few on eBay right now in similar condition to yours for a few dollars each.
