And yet the forests of Europe are more extensive now than they were a century ago because prosperity causes people to pay attention to their surroundings and to look after them and the biggest driver of prosperity in any civilisation is affordable, plentiful energy. Better a gas fired power station then people chopping down trees to make cooking fires.

^ the environmental Kuznets curve ie prosperity drives environmental improvements.

So if Thunberg has her way we can expect environmental degradation.

Why are grown adults so threatened by a sixteen year that they have to abuse her?

What is it that will change that is going to truly affect anyone on this forum? Really?

Because free, functional people always question totalitarians and hold them to account. It doesn't matter if the bully is 16 or 60, they are still bullies and zealots.

If this girl had stood in front of the UN and said that the "CO2 as climate driver" is scientific nonsense the political left activists and media would be calling for her imprisonment and execution.

This is true, however I find it amazing the climate change zealots and media do not understand the stupidity of the EU's and UK's pledge to net zero carbon omissions by 2050 by using bio-mass. In the EU / UK the definition of biomass includes wood. Thus the UK are converting coal fired power stations to wood pellet fired power stations, thus increasing the CO2 omissions as wood does not have the same calorific output when burnt as does coal, thus more wood need = more trees to be cut and pulped.....and yes one can re-plant a tree but how many years before that tree grows sufficiently to have absorbed carbon released by the original tree being burnt.

    https://cees.wfu.edu/2019/06/20/car...missions-pledge-undermined-by-biomass-energy/

Me thinks Greta is unaware of this otherwise she be on telly screaming at the EU pollies in Brussels. :D

I don’t normally cite The Guardian for obvious reasons, but I’ll make the exception here because it is the Neo-liberal Bible:

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2008/jul/03/biofuels.renewableenergy

Policies increasing the use of biofuels contributed directly to famines in Africa. I’ll put that more bluntly, Western governments committed manslaughter. Western voters advocating increasing the use of biofuels are guilty of manslaughter.

It is also Labor policy. So @Peter, how do you feel about being complicit in manslaughter?

And while I’m on a roll - deaths from inhaling smoke caused by burning wood in open cooking fires are around 1.6 million (mostly women and children) per year.

that’s EXACTLY why she was chosen to deliver such a deranged message in the first place... so that anybody who dares to criticise her ill informed message could immediately be shot down as a ‘child critic’ or even worse a ‘child abuser’ of sorts ... that way the religious zealots behind this insane movement never have to deal with the valid criticism coming their way as they are effectively hiding behind a ‘child shield’!
Not too different from terrorist fanatics who fire missiles and shells at people from behind human shields to prevent retaliation..

So let me get this right...

If the reason I dislike Thunberg’s message is because she threatens my masculinity, does it conversely mean that those that like Thunberg’s message do so because it arouses their masculinity?

Of course not, but what a stupid idea it is to counter our argument with the premise that we disagree with her because society ie predominantly males, hates girls.

On the Monday night before Greta, I was addressing my philosophy group and commenting that it is refreshing to see school kids so involved in a movement, irrespective as to the rights and wrongs of the issue.

These post millennials will all be voting in the next couple of years and as such will probably vote left. This of course gives the right something to worry about. Interesting times.

We shouldn’t be encouraging anyone, child or adult to take the world’s stage and offer their opinions when they have no idea what they’re talking about.

Why not, just because you have made your mind up, doesn’t mean that they can’t explore the possibilities.

Explore the possibilities - all for that.
Be a pawn & try to force their dubious opinions on others using guilt - nope.

Her position is to move to a zero emission environment by 2030. In so doing doing condemning over 1.2 billion people currently living in poverty in the world to remain in poverty, not to mention the other billions that will join them as we cut emissions to zero.

I’m happy to listen to the ideas of someone who knows what their talking about exploring possibilities.
