What kind of gold coin can i get in Greece that has some history behind it but price close to spot? Im looking for about a 1/4oz coin. Any coin store i can check out in Athens and Santorini?
Actually while im there i would like to pick up a Greek helmet replica or souvenir. Any place where i can locate a shop that sell these type of souvenir would be helpful.
first coin that comes to mind would be a 20 Drachmai gold coin. Same weight and purity as the French and Swiss 20 Franc with 0.1867oz AGW a little of history to them as well, from Latin Monetary Union times (almost like the Euro before the Euro) not sure if you'll be able to get them close to spot though.
Monesteraki for souvenirs (and fake coins) I never had much luck looking for decent coins in Greece, plenty of Euro sets etc. but not much in the way of gold or silver. Commemorative and Olympics gold coins but not much in the way of early currency. They do have a pretty decent numismatic museum though http://www.nma.gr/index_en.htm
The 20 Drahma is an old gold coin. Not a bullion coin. Should cost around 300 EUR with gold at around 1,180 $. Told you, so that you don't get yourself ripped off. You can also order them online from a reliable seller. So that you make sure they don't sell you fakes.
I'd be interested to see if you can get gold anywhere near spot, considering the financial problems in that country, and potential capital controls.
What happens if greece goes bankrupt while im there? Maybe i should bring some gold with me instead. Lol.
Last time I heard, sovereigns were going for the equivalent of $700. This was after the first issue and then the Cyprus bail-ins and people were looking for something a bit less papery...
You can get old medieval gold byzantine empire coins for around 50-100% over spot for the more common ones sometimes. That's not exactly close to spot, but you can get them at a lower premium than 1/20th gold lunars and they are 1000 year old relics of a great fallen empire, sounds good to me.

If I were in Greece I would be stashing euros or bullion. Capital controls coming then the switch to the Drachma ... therein massive currency devaluation which will probably help the economy but will wreck havoc on Greek currency holders. Will happen only a matter of time
Ok. While im there i will have euros anyways and perhaps i will bring 100g of valambi x1g combibar instead of gold.
