So my dad gave a gold ring, which I was thinking of trading or selling. Thing is I can't find a hall mark on it. Now, my dad is a pretty wealthy guy, and I know where he mostly purchases jewellery - My mum has some amazing stuff. Lots of it custom made with the best stones etc etc. So I can't imagine him buying something dodgy! He knows his stuff, and has used the same jeweller for 20 years! This was his ring, but he grew tired of it and passed it on to me. It is between 4 and 4.5 grams. So why no hallmark? What's that about? Has he dropped the ball on this one? What I don't get is that there is no way a jeweller he has used for 20 years would rip him off, and he wouldn't buy junk from anywhere else. It is gold! I have had it for at least 6 years, he would have had it for many more years before that, and there is no tarnish on it at all, it gleams! Also, under a strong magnifying glass there is still evidence of tooling, which would fit in with it coming from the family jeweller. I'm confused :/ Anyone have any ideas?
Maybe your father was in a rush to get the ring, and didn't want to wait however long it takes to get Hallmarked.
Firstly I'd keep "mum" about any wealth within the family If you live near a capital city you may find a retailer with XRF equipment. Some of them are generous enough to test for you at the measly rate of a gold ($1 or$2) coin donation. Although I'm sure they wouldn't complain if you dropped in a sovereign Give that a go. BTW did I miss the bit where you said you contacted your dad's jeweller?
Many thanks for that! I will try this as I will be in town later this week. Can't contact dads jeweller. Well, I could but it would be a pain. Dad has retired to the UK, his jeweller is in Hong Kong, and I live in Australia! lol Good advice about keeping mum, but with the convoluted nature of my family, no-one is traceable And in case anyone is snooping this forum - everything I have purchased so far is safely held by the bank! So no point looking me up lol (Unless you want a 4 gram un-hallmarked ring of questionable authenticity!) Sadly, other than a 4 year old TV it might just be the most valuable thing in this house lol! Any way - I have two cats and I have trained them to attack! (They don't of course, but the training was fun) lol Ross - yes, possible! Thanks
I was going to go to Gold stackers to purchase my birthday present, so I will ask them, or try w davis of they can't do it. Thanks guys!
It is not uncommon to 'lose' the hall mark if a ring is resized and a peice is removed to make it smaller, jewllers will not restamp the item unless tested. XRF is the best way to.
I just spoke to gold stackers. They will do it for a small donation to their charity bucket, which I am happy to make!
Thanks for all the advice everyone! I found out the ring is 14 carat gold. 58% gold 27% copper 12.5% Silver Traces of other stuff. Approx. lol It is a whisker short of 5 grams Result! Thanks pops!
