So come on stackers - own up - how many of you have a gold coin ring? I saw a beautiful 1/20 nugget ring the other day in a shop, and am seriously considering casting up a nice solid 9ct ring with a decent coin inside it... I already own a sovereign so its likely gonna be an Australian gold coin... So then... 2 Questions - who has a coin ring? and more to the point - if you were looking for a coin to set (round the 1/10 mark) - which coin would you choose? RD
I would go for a 22ct coin as well. Those 999 kangaroos are just too soft. Got one in the other day that was once set inside a bezel and there was rim knocks and and gouges all over the place
Hmm.. I don't have any coin rings, but if I did... a 1905 or '06 Austrian 10 Corona. .900 so not too soft, beautiful strike, beautiful reverse.
You really are a Pikey! Not a fan of coin rings, they just scream, "look at me, I got loads'a money!!!". Mind you other than my wedding ring, which I see I am not wearing at the moment, I don't like any rings. However I did make one out of a silver coin, you know the type, the ones you make by tapping the rim with a spoon and then slowly rotate it and eventually the rim expands and you hollow out the middle like this http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-silver-ring-for-25-cents/
Just aquired one yesterday, it is a fantastic ring, with a 1915 half sovereign, ringed with around 26 dimonds. Unfortunately i wont be able to afford to keep it but I will put a picture up tonight if anyone is interested at having a look at a beautiful specimen of a gold sovereign ring. The older lady we purchased it off insists its an original ring, and I have to say I believe her, it looks fantastic.
Matty that sounds gorgeous... I'll definitely have a peep at that... And Jis - course I'm a pikey - Most of my family have coin rings, but not the 'chav' ostenatious style you see these days - the coin is actually bent around the curve of the finger... I'll try and find a pic of my nana's sovereign...
Here it is, If anyone has any idea what this might be worth that would be very handy, It is a beautiful ring
The ring itself is 9ct total weight of the ring is 24.3g, my photos really dont do it justice as the dimonds (or whatever they are I'll get a Jewlers to confim it) around the rim really set off both the gold and the coin, when you look at it you find yourself drawn between the flashing of the stones around the rim and the splendor and deepness of the gold coin set in the depths of the ring itself. A fantastic piece of Jewllery.
I couldn't give you a diamond weight - but I reckon if thats 'hollowed' inside (that is not a heavy solid 9ct section) it'll probably be about 10 grams of 9ct at a rough guestimate. Therefore - you have about 8 grams gross weight (not AGW) for the sov, plus maybe anpther 10 grams of 9ct - the diamond weight may tip the other 6g. I know nothing about diamonds, and to be honest its more of a job for looking through a 10x loupe at each individual diamond to tell you the quality regardless. Based on those alone - I'd swap you a 10oz bar plus some special pikey goodies for it - you looking to sell/trade it?
Hi RhythmDoctor, good to have you back, hope u are doing ok, thanks for the offer but we are going to get it looked at and valued by a Jewellers first, to see what the would recommend as a vaulation on it. Unfortunately it owes us a bit more so will be most likely looking to sell it. We only purchased it yesterday so havn't really had a chance to properly research it yet but we will try and do that this week. If people are interested I can come back with a valuation of the ring apart from spot gold value. (out of interest we also purchased a beautiful 5 pound 1887 Brittish coin, its huge, set in an 18ct broach type thing with a relatively large 9k chain attached, have to research this sucker as well)
Thanks MatrixOpals for this info, Sorry about the photos, I just cant seem to master my wifes phone camera, for the life of me, I cannot get a close up that is clear. I'll keep trying. Hey on another topic did you get a chance to look at those opal photos I sent through the other night? I tell you what, opals are a beautiful stone.
