Yeah, but remember that inflation also applies to the cash you keep under the mattress. Your $2500 emergency money will buy you 2-4% less every year you keep it there, so you'd lose ~$75 in spending power if inflation is running at 3% p.a. Then again, that's a decent argument for buying precious metals anyway - they might gain or lose value but cash definitely loses value.
