I know its not too exiting, but I found a 1942 S American War Nickel (ASW = 1.75 grams) in a $100 box of nickels that I picked up from the bank yesterday. Pretty cool.
Are you kidding? That's awesome. I wish there was the chance of finding old silver coins in our change here - I would take a lot more notice of coins that come into my possession that's for sure.
Cool brother, a mate was showing me a 1966 50 cent (80% silver) he got in his change the other week. Now how the frikk does that happen since they were pulled over forty years ago?
Last box, I found a 1943 P nickel too. Before that, I had a fake out or two of 1942 nickels that were not silver - they were minted earlier in the year. The location of the mint mark gives it away though. Yes, I've heard all sorts of stories of people finding circulated 90% and 40% silver coins in their change in the USA. That is why I decided to search all those nickels! I did buy about 20 half dollars rolls this year with no luck.
I was on another coin forum where a guy in Vermont, living in a border town would go to one of the local banks and offer to buy all the Canadian money they had accumulated. They would otherwise just sell it back to Canada. One week he found about $570 of Silver coins in what he had hauled home. That was back when silver was about 27-29 per ounce.
Hahaha - CK and I were in a Sydney coin shop and we were going through the 15c coin bin pulling out the NZ 20c coins... then realised we couldn't be arsed buying a double handful of change to "make" 75c. Otherwise another member might have found them being spent on beer
