I just purchased my first Perth Mint 2008 Proof silver Mouse coin from a seller on eBay. I own a few pieces of the bullion version of this coin. Upon first observing the proof coin when it arrived, I immediately noticed how flat and almost featureless looking the Queen's effigy looks. On the bullion coins, the features on the effigy look, how do you say....normal like 3 dimensional. But on the new proof coin, the features look quite flat. So I tested with a magnet: not magnetic. I weighed it with a sensitive scale: 31.9 grams I measured the diameter: about 45mm or so (it's hard to know where the exact centerline of a coin is) I tried measuring the thickness: looks to be about 3mm or so....maybe very slightly thicker. Based on this description and the picture of the coin below, is it likely that this coin is real or fake? Thanks for any insight.
Thanks spanner but that's no help at all - wrong series and wrong side. Here's what my coin's obverse looks like...seems like a normal relief although since this is my first Lunar S2 proof, I have nothing personally to compare with:
Thank you Kam-L!! Good photos. Your effigy side does look like mine. What threw me off is that the bullion coin effigy appears to have considerably more relief than the proof coin effigy. I don't quite understand that. Is it more or less an optical illusion due to the finish or what is that all about?
I've seen proof dragon with just the outline of the queen, no details at all. I guess you got the bad batch.
I have a proof mouse if you want to compare. Send me a pm with your email add, and ill send you a photo to compare.
