In celebration of the exciting renaming of the Panda section of the SilverStackers forum to the much better and more inclusive "Modern Chinese Coins and Medallions", I think it's fitting to begin a thread based on your favorite modern Chinese medals. And even if you don't have a favorite yet, no problem, you can find inspiration from the one's that are shared here from various SilverStacker members. Of course, you don't have to own the modern Chinese medals that are your favorites but you can still share the one's you like or are wanting to buy, right here. So I'll kick it off with a fairly recent silver medal that I would love to own but they are nearly impossible to find because of the extremely low mintage. 2011 Xi-Shi (Four Beauties) Holding a Pearl silver medal obverse 2011 Xi-Shi (Four Beauties) Holding a Pearl silver medal reverse .
Or did you mean the Snake Dance medal in silver? All images taken from WWW (I believe these originated from www.Taobao.com) .
Not sure if I was aware before that there are other versions beside silver one. Both are nice, and maybe even affordable. But silver is silver.
Searching a little bit for Xi-Shi on the Google I came across this thread from our beloved forum: http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-26993-copper-brass-medals-cast-by-the-shanghai-mint-page-5.html It contains monstrous amount of amazing medals (from Shanghai mint). Better not to go through that thread, my wallet wants to escape.
Yes, wow...did you see that Mayan Prophecy Ultra High Relief 80mm Medal? Holy smokes...the Chinese medals are just incredible in aesthetic beauty. And with such low mintages, I suppose if you are not getting in early, you will have a harder time finding them. I think medal collectors tend not to flip medals (they are true collectors) so they come off the market fairly quickly. .
Yup. Actually first I wanted to post the picture here, but was a little bit too lazy. Do all come in plastic bags? I guess it's hard to make capsule for such a high relief, but I prefer having stuff in capsules. Unless it's "jumping" around in it.
The large, think medals almost always come in sealed non-plasticizer plastic "pouches" (bags). The smaller normal thickness medals often (but not always) come in capsules. .
Thanks for the info. Damn above posted set was probably sold out between yesterday and today. :/ Now I will have to wait a long time to find another one. Maybe I will buy some other from that old SS thread.
I picked up the China 2011 Brass and Copper Medal Set - Xi-shi with Pearl this morning for $270 usd hope that was a good price but could not find it anywhere else.Cannot wait to get it. Now i just have to find the silver version which seems to be pretty scarce.
Bravo!!! That's a good price today because the set is very difficult to find. As for the silver, the maximum mintage is no more than 50. I'm not even sure 50 were cast. It will be exceptionally difficult to find the silver since such a low mintage and since such a great design, nobody wants to sell theirs I think. .
Oh so you are that mofo that was faster! Congrats! I've quickly checked on feeBay for some of the medals from that older SS thread. It's hard to find any of them. I guess low mintages and big market and eBay is embarrassed with useless search results.
You may want to contact thincat through eBay and ask if he has another set. I have made a couple of purchases from him off of eBay. He is trustworthy and ships very fast to the U.S. .
Been watching that one for a while finally decided to pull the trigger before someone else i guess i was right. I contacted Frank(Thincat) directly to get a much better price than ebay with free shipping i think he has one more set by the way he worded his email to me. Better do it quick in case i decide to try and get another set. So much for the Silver version then if it is so low mintage the price is probably pretty high.
Yes Frank is a reliable and trustworthy seller off eBay. His shipments from China arrive more quickly in some cases than many shipments of products I receive from within the domestic U.S. Sounds like it can't be possible but that express shipping from China really is very fast. The only thing that is a bit tricky to deal with is written communication because of the time difference from Canada / US and China. .
Snake Dance in Silver is on feeBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/China-2012-...001?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item234c110459 (a little over my contingency budget )
That's bigger than most large Chinese medals. If my math is correct, the large type 12 troy oz Panda silver medals are only 373 grams....that like 1,000 grams short of the silver Snake Dance medal. Not to forget the Snake Dance medal is very thick....I have the brass and copper set so I know just how thick the Snake Dance is. And at 120mm that's also a BIG diameter silver medal. Max mintage of the silver Snake Dance is 99 but actual mintage is way less according to an inside source I had contacted. .
