I got a message from customs asking for duties on .999 silver bullion coins from Hong Kong. However the sender labelled the order as "numismatics collectibles" when they are just standard .999 bullion rounds. Is there any way to avoid paying this wrongly imposed tax?
I am not sure whether this will work, but provide a tariff code? Here's the link to various tariff codes from the DFAT website https://dfat.gov.au/trade/agreement...-Australia-AANZFTA-HS2012-Tariff-Schedule.pdf
No tax on .999 bullion.... Get an invoice stating it from the sender so you can give it to customs as proof.
Obviously not a sender to decide what is numismatics collectibles in Australia, otherwise they could send you Krugerrand coins as investment gold bullion, despite the fact they are regarded, and treated as investment gold bullion everywhere else on the world.
just call FedEx and explain to them they are GST exempt. they will get you to fill out some form to declare they are GST exempt and agree to some other declarations as well.
