The tax $/ton comparison is not apples:apples. The carbon tax has more breadth & depth.

I think that the PM's behavior of legislating a carbon tax & radiating airport travelers with no mandate qualifies her as a tyrant. Hitler was elected.

I'm not terribly nationalistic. I'm probably more of an individual libertarian. If it was up to me you'd be able to grow your own personal use chop-chop tax-free.

Edit: Not sure what a Tea Partier is in your context. If you mean holding the Constitution in higher regard than any ruling president, then hell yes that would be me.

Agreed, I've had to share quarters with farters and snorers, I will not again.

You have really lost me here. What has this to do with a carbon tax?

When lead in petrol was found to be a problem they did not introduce a carbon tax. They removed the lead.

Nope, i mean brain dead morons who want personal freedoms and then side with massive corporations to do their bidding, too stupid to realise they are just being used for the personal gain of the "elites" ,who are apparently their biggest enemy.
I mean people who think Fox news, is actually legitimate news.
I mean people who throw around the words, Marxism, socialism, communism, Maoism and all the other isms, with out even knowing what they mean.
I mean the people that are against things like healthcare reform and turn up in the tens of thousands to protest it, even when it would benefit them more than anyone, but wouldn't protest against the bankers who have ripped them off trillions.

Please don't forget that the carbon tax is just a stepping stone to an ETS administered by the banksters.

Only people stupid enough to take up smoking pay that tax.

To live in a modern society you have to pay the carbon tax. Plus, tobacco tax doesn't have any real negative effects on the economy as a whole, even if it does adversely effect your personal economy.

Hey, I don't care what you drive but when you look at a Hummer idling in traffic doing 12mpg and compare to it something like a Chevvy Volt which gets better than 85mpg you have to wonder what else would make people opt for more efficient cars.

Try comparing the carbon output from a Hummer and a coal fed power station though. Then try comparing Australia's total CO2 output to the likes of India or China, we are but a drop in the ocean. As long as I can afford to put fuel in my 4WD, it will be driven.

This carbon tax is nothing but money in the pocket of the elites at the expense of the working class.

Which is exactly why I think it should be revenue neutral, where they reduce income taxes by the amount they expect to raise from the carbon tax, or even better divide the amount they raised by the number of people in australia and rebate it all back. Working class people would almost certainly be better off under a system like that than they are now.

I thought the "let them eat cake" reference was sufficient. You really should Google it, as the times that were then may be coming back again.

Really I did not think I had to spell this out. But obviously not, so here it is.

What of the people who cannot afford to choose between a hummer and a volt? What of the people who can only drive an old Holden or Ford.

Yes, Marie Antoinette, quils mangent de la brioche, etc. I'm aware of the reference but I don't immediately see how it is relevant because...

...a Hummer is more expensive to purchase than a Volt so there shouldn't really be a problem with being able to afford a Volt if you've got the cash to spend on a Hummer, should there?

Well, for a star,t the sales of Holden Commodores are down 50% on where they were ten years ago so it would seem that a lot of people can't afford to keep them on the road with the high price of petrol anyway.

If people can afford to keep a car that only gets 20mpg running, fine, keep it running until it dies and then buy something that doesn't suck down as much fuel. How much more expensive does petrol have to get before that is actually the cheaper option? (Well, no more expensive than it is now for half the former Holden Commodore buyers out there).

Maybe that would be best. Your response was rather obtuse.

You're right - they're screwed in the long medium to long term by oil prices anyway.
