What about the natives of Irian Jaya? For over 50 years we Australians have deserted them....The people of Irian Jaya are not of Asian origin but are native people like the ones in New Guinea.

Australian governments both red and blue have always backed Indonesia...Why? IMO because we are frightened!

We screwed East Timor with the oil deal and now we force a country to live under Indonesian control.

Train their soldiers? Some day it will come back and bite us on the ass.

    Regards Errol 43

This is false. The oil deal was hugely beneficial for East Timor (especially in the circumstances that they were in) and cost the Australian Government. Saying that, given they are proving themselves to be able to form a stable society with an effective rule of law, there may be a point where it is worthwhile to revisit the original deal.

When he was a junior officer he was hating Australia's involvement in East Timor, and now that he is the head honcho of Indonesian Special Forces Kopassus he can say so and virtually do as he pleases.

When I was training at the jungle warfare centre in Canungra in Queensland I had a physical confrontation with an Indonesian officer where I was encouraged to stick the boot in more by my NCO's but I didn't,looking back I wished that I had

    There is no fuss!

Just cut off all the aid we give them only produce enough beef we can sell without them and keep turning back the boats.

They may reinstate the Visa on arrival fee for Australians going to Bali in retaliation.

Whatever happens it's will be even more reason for them to make any Aussie a scapegoat for any misdemeanour or even set
    them up as already seen.
Unfortunately lol I agree with mmm...shiney It's all about elections.
Boycott the whole country including Bali of course see what happens then...if only people would!

The West Papua is a very real and topical issue.

Genocide happenig under our noses every single day and we pretend we can't see it.

It's a blight and shame on every Australian party to hold office since the land was stolen from WP.

The stolen land isssue is current enough that we should be taking action. Australia is scared of the worlds largest muslim population just a few klms to our north.

    That's the bottom line.

Just trying to remember, what is the official government reasoning whereby East Timor is worthy of its noble and splendid independence whereas West Papua is forever sovereign Indonesian land?

Please help me with my cognitive dissonance.

Yes but surely there is an official cover story.

You know, like what must be taught to high school students.

Like a combination of "tell an outrageous lie..." and "a lie repeated often enough becomes the truth"

I sure did sing God Save the Queen a lot in primary school. And look how long she has lasted...
