pony virus had nothing to do with mtgox

it was/is used to steal bitcoin wallets directly from infected computers

I think it might still be operating

Bitcoin should be nothing like fiat.

Fiat is constantly being devalued by central bankers and politicians - hence its value is constantly being eroded (in fact stolen).
Bitcoin - by its very design - should never lose value, but should instead actually gain value over time.

Please correct me if i'm wrong

That's correct it you look at Bitcoin on it's own, it would be deflationary and steady or diminishing coin supply. However if you look at crypto currencies as a whole then the amount of coins is ever growing with more and more alternative coins being produced.

Fiat is an exceptional medium of exchange.

Bitcoin appears to be a good medium of exchange for larger values and I believe it will be a good store of value in the future.

There was virus? Funny as I was just thinking whether someone could design a trojan horse/ program that could infect users of a certain exchange, effectively siphoning off their coins.

Possible or is there some sort of mechanism built into cryptocurrencies that can prevent this?

There's already worms doing the rounds that scan computers for wallet.dat files and upload them to servers.

Pretty sure there's one that keylogs as well as captures the wallet.dat and more likely getting the virus from a bitcoin related app/file

I think you'll find a lot of people don't bother password protecting/encrypting their wallets.

yeh - keyloggers can be a devastating pain the ass!!

all one can do is to have top-notch anti-virus and anti-malware apps on your computer to stop keyloggers being installed.
(Superantispyware is a good anti-malware app)

also, be very careful what bitcoin related software you load onto your machine... i personally regard ANY and ALL such software with extreme suspicion and immediately assume that they WILL have coin stealing code embedded inside them.
For this very reason i will only install bitcoin-related software onto my pc/phone or whatever that I am 100% sure is legit.
eg bitcoin and litecoin wallets downloaded from the official bitcoin/litecoin sites.
