    me no understand!

i just read another thread and somewhere in it the banker was explaining the drop in the gold price was due to a big sell off. forgive me if this is too logical but doesn't that also mean that there has been a big buy up? i've always been perplexed by this notion of market loses due to everyone 'selling'. i always thought that to sell something someone has to 'buy' it, correct? share market is the same, "everyone is selling". can you sell to nobody?

Yes. It's that there are more people now willing to sell at lower prices and/or less buyers at the previous prices.

yes, you can sell to nobody, meaning to yourselves. this illegal activities does not apply to some big players.

we usually call them insider making trading based on illegal information and doing illegal activities when perform by the general public.

    this is HFT common practices.
