Just a warning to all stackers. I was looking through a bunch of sovereigns with a Melbourne dealer today, and something struck me as odd. One of the coins was a slightly different colour, not noticeable by itself, but clear in comparison with the others. Jokingly I said "that's a fake" even while it was still in the bag. We took it out and weighed it and found it was 1 whole Gram underweight. As we had access to an XRF machine, we were able to determine that it was also only 18 Carat. A very nice copy nonetheless. On closer inspection we found another one in the same bag. Same Deal. They both were 1925 George V South African Mintmark Sovereigns. So beware, there might be someone casting 1925 SA Sovereigns. Ck.
Interesting... having come into possession of 1927, 1928 and 1932 South African sovs this week :| Had already weighed them and they all came in at 7.99gm / 8.00gm - but a date with the XRF is in their future.
strangely enough my fisch knockoff just arrived in the mail today... I've tested most of my sovereigns and they have all passed so far. as a side question, a couple of the sovereigns have sellotape residue on them. what would be the best way to clean it off without damaging the coins?
