Before I sell, can I ask … do Morgan dollars weigh a little light, even with minimal wear?

no…silver coin should not lose weight contents if it is slightly wearer-out…maybe fraction of a fraction to its weight due to wear…unless drilled

Google tells me they should be 26.73gms. What do yours weigh?

If they are substantially lighter with only minimal wear, then the question has to be asked if they are legit or Chinese knockoffs.

Where did you buy them from, a well-known dealer/member or one of the online selling platforms?

Hope yours are the real McCoy, as I see loads of counterfeit silver dollars for sale even on reputable public auction sites these days.

Maybe post a few pics to see what the workmanship and detail on the coins is like, most of the fakes are quite easy to distinguish if you have a
real coin to compare it with.

    Yep. That’s what I found.
I also saw that coins were occasionally underweight brand new from the mints themselves. Sometimes by as much as 1gram.
I’ll study it further before I make a final decision.

thanks heaps to those who’ve chipped in.

Yesterday I read the article Chips linked to.
I found it to be pretty good. Nice work Chips.
NCG also had some ideas, I’ll revisit those.

I have some Morgan dollars somewhere and my memory is that they "felt" a little light. I think I tested one with an app - silver ounces have a sound signature - and it passed the test. If you've got an Android phone, you can download the app and test it. I can't remember the name of the app, though - haven't use it in years.

Edit: It's called Bullion Test. Don't know how accurate it is...

Edit: Haha, this guy even tests a Morgan dollar:

Yeah, it's a great app. I think it would be incredibly difficult to fool it with a coin of the wrong metal.

Incidentally, I was super curious about the silver sound signature of silver. I worked out the pitches (close proximity) of the prominent frequencies of the one ounce silver kookaburra and played them back simultaneously - with a bit of ingenuity - on my piano. I was able to trick the app into believing I had struck a silver 1 oz kookaburra coin, when the sound was coming from my piano.

    :)
