I really hope they do not become violent, and start killing each other.

Just on market close. Pundits believe that Erdogan favoured Islamic type government. Time will tell whether this coup will bring seculars to power.

I wonder how this will affect Turkey's application to join the EU? How will this impact on NATO if the coup succeeds? Will Turkey subsequently pull out of Cyprus? Do blondes have more fun?

The Turkish military launch their coups on Fridays, clean up and stabilize over the weekend, so every one else can go back to work by Monday with minimal disruptions.

    27 May 1960 - Friday
    12 Mar 1971 - Friday
    12 Sep 1980 - Friday
    28 Feb 1997 - Friday

If the market closes at the time prices are suddenly spiking due to some world event, would dealers be prudent to stop taking orders? Or does everything continue to get hedged okay over the weekend?

    SS,

"I wonder how this will affect Turkey's application to join the EU? How will this impact on NATO if the coup succeeds? Will Turkey subsequently pull out of Cyprus?"

The reason for the decade+ delay on entry to the EU is all about the 80 Million muslims wanting to head west. Merkel and Coy have bypassed that by going for visa free travel.

If the Turkish armed forces are running the show i expect them to want to retain NATO membership.

Cyprus? I doubt they will give that up.

    Depends On Who Is Asking.
Apparently 15 Police Officers killed at the Special Forces HQ - Attack Helicopters heard in the Turkish's Capitol - Tanks rolling over cars in Ankara also - Wow Wow and Wow !!!!

and as I am writing this crowds of people in the streets laying on the ground while plenty of automatic guns fires flies all around.

Maybe many Turkish people (and military) have had enough of the continuing Islamification of Turkey which is far from the founders Ataturk's original aspirations of where no religious interference is warranted or wanted.

I read that jets are flying low passes over Ankara, that means that the coup is led by the top level of the Army and Air Force Staff.

Nothing strong enough to stop them.

I read that the jets are under control of the Turkish government, and have shot down at least one helicopter used by the coup participants. No doubt what's actually happening will become clearer in the next few hours.

That will be interesting, a civil war between the Army and the Air Force, never seen that before.

I will back the 'boots on the ground'.

    Just spitballing, Russia.

Could they be behind this as revenge for The Ukraine?

Europe is Catholic to the south, Protestent to the. North, and Orthodox to the East. By having an alliance with New Turkey Russia blunts NATO.
