Thanks aleks, just watched the first four episodes of season 2. All of the people on that show are wankers except for the kid, and gramps, at the Big Nugget mine. This is one of those annoyingly entertaining shows to watch...

Just watched episode 3, man that old man (Tod's father) is an idiot and a cry baby.

PS, Dakota Fred needs his balls kicked.

I hate the show with a passion because evryone (apart from the old nugget mine operation) are tools.

and yet I still watch... mainly to see them fail and a 16 year old succeed.
It's all scripted for the record, no way Fred would have come in and said those things by himself if it were real, especially to those bunch of violent morons.

It frustrates me to watch these guys sabotage themselves.

In the latest episode they spend a few days flattening out an area the size of a football field, before confirming that the area has not been mined before.

    They guys are clowns.

One thing this show does really hit home though, is that not everyone is going to get rich by running a gold mine.

Even the Big Nugget Mine, which has been around year after year, are pulling in only a couple of hundred thousand a season. Keeping in mind the expenditure on buying the land, all the equipment, paying salaries and the risk of not getting anything out of the ground at all, i'm really not all that envious of them.

Having said that, I would love to spend a week working there just for kicks.

It's absolutely scripted - read the blog by the guy who left half way through the first season. He was mad and let out some home truths about how the show really works.

Stuff like how the fish & game inspector was really there to investigate illegal logging for the construction of the houses, and how someone "nearby" had basically dobbed on them, finding the illegal water channel was just a bonus while the guy was there, but the producers decided not to include the illegal logging as a story :)

Reality TV is usually anything but. Just like the news which is more often a half-hour dose of propaganda, fear, hysteria, gossip and useless nonsense, with a little bit of reality if you look really close.

Maybe they're trying to discourage people from mining for gold, like they're trying to prevent people from buying it??

    Thoughts....

episode 6 will put you to sleep, no talk of gold. I tell myself this every week, but next episode should show some improvement :)

Why do I keep fooling myself?

I am the same way with this show.

Every episode you think "they could make it big next episode", then you watch the next episode and feel let down again.

Unfortunately I am hooked, but at least there are a couple of other players to watch this season.

I still think that it is amazing that these guys have dropped so much money but have not paid for professional consultants to help them plan out the best way into proceed. From the start of the first season it has been "let's just dig and the gold will come".

I am sure that editing plays a part in all of this of course.

I'm absolutely amazed it's taken them this long to get some drill samples before digging.

    ...well not really

I know one very rich person who refuses to pay for marketing or advise, rationalising that the money he would spend doing it himself on a gut feeling vs paying for specialist advice would be similar if he screwed up. Horses for courses.

Understand the theory, but depends on the game that you are playing.

The drilling mentioned above is a good example. They have spent $150-300k on heavy machinery, yet it took them 1 1/2 seasons to spend $5-10k on drilling samples.

If they were spending $5k with the pay-off being $20k then it is a fair chunk of the profit.

$5k of the $500k-$1mil that they are hoping for should be a no-brainer when their equipment is costing them $1000/day plus just to keep running.

What a bunch of clowns. Todd with his endless "I guarantee you that"'s, Jack with his weird face and constant sookie-fits, and don't get me started on Harness; the dude's a junky! Oh, and have you seen Fred Hurt's HANDS? Almost all of his fingernails look like they're about to fall off, it grosses me out every time..

Really enjoying the show, definitely hooked. Watched Season 1 in about 3 sittings, season 2 is different/slightly better, I just want them to run some god-damn dirt already! *considers mining*

Agree 100%. I thought Dakota Fred was supposed to be a pro??? It has been 60 days already and he has yet to get any gold. I think they found the dumbest people in America and told them to go up north, there's gold in the ground.

PS, I hope that kid kicks everyone's ass. He seems pretty smart for a 17 year old.

No gold despite the title of the episode.

Next week should be good though, finally, as all 3 mones are running dirt.

I don't watch watch this but it's obvious to me the money they are making is by selling a TV soap which is supposedly (but only tenuously) linked to reality from a subject that has become in vogue with many people and therefore marketable. The intention is NOT looking to get money from gold (though if they lucked out I'm sure they'd appreciate it).

These shows are a barometer for the public's interest. They are not any more interesting for me to watch than are the property shows and certainly shouldn't be taken seriously..

I was actually thinking the same thing today. The "boys" probably get paid quite nicely by the TV show and that's why they screw everything up and are probably not even working as hard as they should be.
