    Hi,

I have a very interesting situation happening. My fianc has received an inheritance from her late father in the form of 22Kgs of gold bullion. The problems come it is that she is from Ghana. She has only an inheritance document stating that the gold was her property now. She managed to leave Ghana on Sunday night but got detained at Heathrow for the gold had no legal ownership or change of ownership from her father's name.

The gold cannot be returned to Ghana without attracting serious questions that really cannot be answered. So it appears the only practical answer is to have the gold transferred into my name and I take on full ownership of the gold. This is being done in Ghana now. My question then is as the owner of this gold and it is being transported by my fianc, she will have to declare it. Any idea what happens from there? Is there any way we could be penalised for anything? Is VAT still payable in Ghana? At any rate I welcome a discussion on this as I am very torn up about this.

    Thank you in advance.:)

Hire a container to send your 22kg back on, maybe get a lawyer too! Maybe easier to post than get through customs?

I am afraid, if she failed to declare this gold it may very likely confiscated and chances to recover it are very slim in my opinion. She may face all sorts of legal trouble, perhaps been accused been a mule, money laundering, drugs- you name it. If the gold can be recovered it will likely cost a bit in legal fees and perhaps some custom fees.
Generally gold of such quantity is to be transported by Brinks company only. Customs are very sensitive if one transports gold in larger qty without using the 'official' Brinks type companies.

Send me your bank account details. You send me the value of the gold to my account and I'll bankwire transfer the value back when you are back in Ghana, that way to don't have to worry about going back through customs.

When I got my Ghandan gold inheritance, I had only paid for 15kg of luggage and the excess baggage fees were huge,
so I just left my remaining gold and passport details with the customs guys there, they were very trustworthy and another passenger bought it through and delivered it to me a day later. hope this helps

    Yes, yes, yes.

Send the cash amount in full, often when you do this, the amount you will receive in return is much higher due to government death rebates, no paper work required here. The government will give a return of 300% so you will get back 4x your money. That way instead of having 22kg of gold you can have 88kg, much better.

This information was provided by Humanitarians Association for Ghana.

However you must be quick the government is considering changing the rules any day now.

Just be completely honest with the authorities. Pay any VAT or duties and treat whatever you get as a lucky windfall. No point asking us. An accountant familiar with applicable laws would provide far better advice.

    Your story sounds like BS
    It doesn't even make sense
If there is any truth to your story , you should have done your homework first instead of "just trying to get it through customs "
How the hell are any of us suppose to know if there is tax to be collected in Ghana ?
Your the one trying to get it out
I know of a few people who import gold legally out of Africa

This line threw me a bit.

I thought for sure the OP had just posted in the wrong forum and the thread belonged in the JOTD.
