I saw an ad for it last night but have not been able to find anything online.

7 news claim to be running a story on fake Australian gold and its economic affects etc. The ad is short and it looks like they are kicking in doors (not literally) on actual sites minting the replicas/fakes. I believe they use the phrase 'fake Australian gold'.
Advertised for Monday night on Perth television (unsure if its national). Will keep looking for more info or update if i see the ad again.

    edit thanks to silverthorn:

I hope they kick in the "right" doors though.

At the same time, should they kick in the "wrong" doors for fake gold but accidentally find real gold along with questionable activities, I'm sure the door won't be quietly closed with an apology.

I havent seen the advertisement again today and I am not sure what time.

Educated guess would put it in the nightly news spot for channel 7.
If anyone else sees anything can you post it?
Also, if any of you east coastern'ites watch the story tomorrow night, can you give us western folk any update on time/content.

If perth mint has had some items faked why hasnt anyone heard of it before ? It seems a bit strange that one of the dealers or the mint hasnt mentioned it before now. Look at the publicity the fake gold bar got the other week .....we'll have to wait & see if its a beat up of some sort

Yup, there is a "replicated bar" wording there. Looks more like a copper bar.

Trust me, you didn't miss much at all.

A reporter has found a factory in China where they are making fake Perth Mint gold bullion.

Or, instead of fake, I should say, they are making replica's

There was no investigation, no reporting it to police, no huge bust... the people doing the work were more than happy to show their wares off for the camera.

Whole segment ran for about 1 min.

Millions of coins. Not just Pandas I think you will find. People only seem to think of Pandas as being faked. Can guarantee there are far more fakes out there than just Panda's.

Counterfeit Detection: Australia 2012 Year of the Dragon Silver Dollar

Posted by Max Spiegel, Numismatic Researcher on 8/14/2012

The popularity of lunar coins has grown of late, making the coins an excellent target for counterfeiters.

Lunar coins have become very popular in recent years with coins struck annually to commemorate the Chinese Zodiac, a calendar that assigns a different animal to each year in a 12-year cycle. The first government-issued lunar coin was the Hong Kong 1976 Year of the Dragon $1,000 gold piece, and since that time a number of other countries have introduced lunar coin series.

Chinese and Australian lunar coins are particularly popular, and the 2012 year of the dragon coins were widely anticipated. NGC has graded thousands of these coins, issued in a number of sizes and denominations. Almost immediately, however, we began to receive counterfeits.

One example is this 2012 Australian Year of the Dragon dollar. Although genuine examples are not rare or particularly valuable, this issue has still been targeted by counterfeiters. The major issue with this fake is the lack of detail in the design elements. In addition, the letters around the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II are malformed and have a pimpled appearance. The overall appearance differs significantly from the sharply struck genuine examples.

These fakes are not particularly deceptive, but a one ounce 2012 silver dollar is not something that would normally set off a red flag or require close inspection. Although someone familiar with the legitimate coins would not be fooled, this is a coin that could easily be overlooked.
