Heard a solid rumour at the FUN Show that next years Panda will be 30 grams - no longer a troy ounce. Basically 2015 is the "transition" year with no markings, but still the full 1oz.

    Source was reputable.

2014 panda medal by shanghai mint also is at 30 gram.

What is china Gold Corp try to do?

It is really out from the international trend and standard.

Hmm. Should be interesting. Odd though that it won't be an ounce anymore....

My guess is they want a metric bullion coin - I think it's misguided though. Don't see any ISO 4217 currency codes for a gram of silver.

If you were going to go metric, wouldnt 50grams would be a better replacement for the 1oz size.

100g to replace the 2oz, 250g the 5 oz etc..

A roll of 20 coins = 1kg is a lot rounder in metric terms than any mulitples of 30 grams.

Is the 30g size just so people can still use the 1oz spot price to see value without havin to do any calcs?

30g is probably the closest round metric number to one troy ounce.

Try 31.25g for a metric ounce.
    4 would be 125 grams
    8, 250g
    16, 500g
and 32 would be a kilo.

    Simples.

Thanks for sharing the rumor. If it comes to fruition, my run of 1 troz gold bullion Pandas from 1982 thru 2015 comes to a close after a 34-year run.

I was looking for the picture where they show the tube in the middle getting bigger as well, couldn't find it...

I am ok with it. There are already metric bars, I guess if I particularly wanted Pandas then I might scratch my head a bit.

Troy ounces, Avoirdupois, ounces, troy pounds, Imperial measures and US customary measures etc. Metric system is fine, there are no traps for the unwary.

I can Google how many troy ounces in a troy pound, and I can calculate how to work out the spot price in grams but why bother?

If they publish the spot price in grams and sell the new rounds in metric amounts then life will have one less minor inconvenience. In this day and age we have the resources to publish the price in metric, troy ounces and any currency we like.

That's an impressive run. And I though I was doing well with my 1oz AG Kooks from 1991 - 2008.

But thats stackers for ya, always someone here who got one bigger than yours. :p

Peter Anthony - Panda Pricepedia author confirms the rumor of the change over at the Chinese Coins forum.

"Yes discussed in the November 2014 China Pricepedia."

If it is priced right and looks nice then people will not be over bothered I wouldn't think. If it is the same price as the current Pandas then people might get a bit miffed about their missing 1 gram.

I think if they were going to go decimal, a move that I have no problem with, then something like 50g would have been a better round number.

I will see what the prices are like before I make a decision on whether to add any to my other two pandas.

Im all for metric, Ounces is ridiculous way of measurement but yeah should be 50gm coins. I don't buy 100 oz bars because of odd weights.

I've seen YouTube videos & comments that some of them have been underweight, at 0.99 oz.

Supposedly not something that's started this year, either, with past-year examples.

Looks like I'm stopping at 2014, thanks. Never been a huge fan of them, overall, anyway..

    Nah.

It's so they can skimp on 1.1g, and still charge a full-oz price.

With mintages at X millions, pretty soon it adds up..

Grab a calculator & do the maff, and you'll see what I mean. :)
