Hi, I'm currently looking at a 2000 panda... i think it's a fake, but someone has gone to a lot of trouble of double sealing etc. What do you think? cheers M
Here is my good bear if you wanna compare A bigger pic of your suspect bear would help Thanks. If you're looking to buy a 2000 bear, my Panda is available at a fair price
thanks for the pic yennus. This panda did look suspicious, I took this pic from ebay, the seller has already sold 4!!! It's sad folk are paying a lot for these coins... i saw a fake 2007 panda go the other day too... How does one report these fake on ebay? Cheers M
Tell the dudes over at the China Coin Forum, they are like the elite Panda Fans http://china-mint.info/forum/index.php?board=11.0 They is organised too... a whole list of blacklisted EBay sellers, etc.
It is only my opinion but coins that sell for premiums like this 2000 mirror are best purchased already graded. It is too risky on high value coins like this to purchase them in raw condition; they are the target of many counterfeiters. Very many people have been burned on coins like this one, the 1999 serif & the 1995 micro date. Anytime you see that BSOD (black spot of death) on the 2000 mirror panda ... stay away from it ...
Oh and another thing ... the fake panda is not in its original OMP either ... the S10Y 2000 mirror was minted at the Shanghai Mint which yennus's 2000 panda is indicative of that fact, the fake one is not. The OMP is not always a sign of a counterfeit but it does throw up "red flags" and questions should be asked why the coin you may consider purchasing is not in its OMP, sometimes there is an adequate reason why it is not and sometimes it's just because the seller is a toolbag.
Speaking of packaging, how were the 2011 packaged originally. I just received a 1oz 2011 from AMPEX and thought it would be sealed, but it's just in a regular hard plastic capsule. Even if it's real, it would make it hard for me to resell one day...right? Thanks mates.
All 1 oz Silver Chinese Pandas after 2005 were no longer double sealed ... 2006 to 2011 are only distributed in the hard plastic capsule. If you buy 30 or more the plastic capsules do come in a sealed sheet though.
Ahh didn't know they come in a sealed sheets of 30. I will say the capsule is different to other coins like the Britannia. The Panda capsules have a concave shape harder to stack if your that way inclined
Everyone has their own opinion but I am especially cautious of buying 1 oz silver Chinese pandas (2005 and prior) that are not 'double sealed" especially on ebay or anywhere in the US as it leads me to believe that "possibly" the coin may have been already submitted for grading, received a bad grade and now the seller is attempting to unload a paper weight on me. This is not conclusive by any means but a high probability on ebay or in the US I know because I have personally been teabagged like this before. My question to the seller is "why did you remove the coin from its OMP"? Be especially cautious if the seller also sells graded coins this is HUGE red flag then.
So this statement from this company's description regarding their 2011 Pandas is bogus? http://www.austincoins.com/coins/2011-china-panda-silver-coin-21.aspx "Legal Tender Silver Chinese Panda coins are genuine legal tender coins, issued exclusively by the People's Bank of China. Each of the pure Silver Panda Coins is minted in one troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver. At very affordable prices, these coins make great gifts and are an excellent addition to any coin collection. Each Silver Panda comes double-sealed from the China Mint in a clear, protective package that surrounds a plastic holder. This keeps out effects of harmful air pollution and helps to preserve these beautiful coins for generations to come." Seems buying non-slabbed single coins after 2005 is a crap shoot, except of course from y'all
No ... the 2011 coins that come in the sheet such as the 2011 silver pandas are basically in a plastic tray the has thirty slots in it. each coin just sits in the slot and then there is a plastic wrap around this tray. Once you remove the outer wrapping on this thirty coin tray/sheet, the coins are only left in individual plastic capsules.
