These are the two scarcest $200 uncirculated gold coins produced by RAM from 1980 (Koala) to 1994 (Tasmanian Devil).

The 1992 Echidna has a mintage of 3935, and the 1993 Squirrel Glider has a mintage of only 3014.
They are the keys to completing the "Pride of Australia" $200 gold coin set, and regularly sell for more than other $200 coins.
They are a great store of value, plus have a numismatic premium attached to them due to low mintage.

Does anyone own the complete set, and how hard was it to complete ?

I own a complete set and a half. Both proof and uncirculated.
Can't remember how long it took to build a set but would have been less than a year.

I have a proof set (NOT uncirc) of the 1989-94 'Pride of Australia' series in the wood case. Plus various other uncirc and proof $200's. Love 'em.

It is quirky that there were actually more proof than uncirc for those latter years.

I've got a complete set of the uncirculated coins, I hate the proof coins because they're too bulky to store.

I should get rid of the proof coins I do have, anyone want to trade?

I absolutely love these Pride of Australia proof coins, probably my favorite gold coins along with the 87-88 Brittanias...

The cases are awesome, beautifully presented and just so Aussie!

Wow i thought these might have some collectable value, especially that some have very low mintage. They must be one of the least liked gold coins then if the proofs only go for $20 above spot. Why is this?

So CK, if the original packaging is in place, the coin is worth more?

I have some original packaging in a box in the hallway but the coins are separated and I don't find the packaging very attractive at all, and it doesn't age well.

Come time for sale I've kept the packaging but I expect to just sell on spot value so storing dusty old packaging is just an annoyance really.

Care to put a percentage or dollar figure on the packaging?

Impurity, 22k gold. Some of the base metals react with atmosphere.

Some sovereigns does the same thing.

But how come the proof version doesn't go yellow? both are 22ct. are the proofs coated with something to help it from discolouring?

The proof versions are in an acrylic capsule. The acrylic does not cause colouring and the small amount of air means few impurities also.
The uncirculated versions react with the open air and the plastic.

    Lol.

This is clear evidence of how people can be misled by the internet.

Anyone who has peeled open an uncirculated coin, and I peel all my cardboard uncirculated ones; will know that the uncirculated coins come in an orange tinted plastic covering.

Thats what makes them more golden appearing.

Theres no chemical reactions or any other such stuff going on.

Sorry guys, practical experience trumps over internet science lol.....

I have been stacking these for a few years because of the bullion value - close or below spot.

Any that are in sealed packets I rip open then weigh and measure.

The unsealed coins or the proofs in plastic containers always weigh at least 10g and usually more.

The sealed coins weigh in at 9.93g. Anyone else noticed this?

I wonder how many actual $200 coins there are left - much less than the mintage numbers might suggest.
I've personally seen hundreds being sent for melting by dealers just in the past year alone.
And another dealer that only sells on ebay, told me they don't bother putting $200 coins on ebay because it's not worth it - they send them for melting by default.

Not to mention how many were 'cashed in' to banks during the 1990s when the face value was higher than the gold content.

Yet they are still very commonly seen and don't sell for any real premium.
