Never heard of them being faked,
But it sounds like it could be a jewellers copy

I've seen some really lousy sovs in rings and bezels. Obviously cheap copies. Does the Kruger look as bad as this? http://www.thefind.com/gifts/info-krugerrand-coin (Scroll down, on the left "Vintage 1980 Gold Krugerrand Gold Coin, Fyngold Fine...
    $700
    Etsy"

Edit to add: This is the one I'm referring to:

Does it look wrong to anyone else, or is it just my imagination?

I don't have a 1980 Kruger but I do have an 81 and a 74 (as well as others) None of them have anything written below the image of Paul Kruger.

Here's what I see when I look at my Krugers (I love you Paul)

actual example of the 1980 half kruger

I'm not sure if grading applies as these are bullion coins

in contrast to the suspect item, which has different colouration, lustre and finish, with some kind of marking as highlighted below

note also the romanisation of the nose, angulation and sharp taper of the beard, loss of anatomical detail of the ear (only an outline of the helix remains), change of hairdo and squint on the eye

grading applies if it means getting the price to drop a little bit.

I'd be surprised if it made any difference in price to a dealer

245,096 were minted in 1980 (the first year of the 1/2 ounce)

the proof version is very scarce though, just 80, in sets.

Different number of serrations on the edge (220 vs 160 in bullion coins)
