I was at an LCS today and they had one of these out with the rest of their bullion stock, being a quick witted sort I remembered that the 1899 Perth veiled sovereign was on the Perth mint's handy list of rare sovereigns. Not being a sovereign collector and being new to numismatics I have no idea how to assess its condition though.

I figured I'd take a chance on it though since I've always wanted a set of sovereign scales and said scales wouldn't be much use without a sovereign, so worst case scenario I have a coin to weigh.

So, based on these shoddy phone pictures (will take better ones when I get my camera out) how would you grade it? Have I got myself a bargain or a sovereign like every other? For what it's worth some of the apparent scrabble on old queen vic is just some scratching on the coin protector plastic.

Part of me hopes it isn't very special cause I need another expensive hobby, like collecting sovereigns, like I need a hole in my head.

Anything you can tell me about it is appreciated.

Is there a good online list of rare sovereigns or do you need to buy a guide book? I've seen a few lists but they admit to being incomplete.

Aren't the standards for grading sovs a bit higher due to the fact that they have little real circulation?

got another 1899 p today...maybe I'll start collecting them. I actually quite like knowing the gold in them came from the first nuggets pulled out of the west.

I took the first one out of the slip for a peak and it looks MUCH better than it does in the slip and in the picture. what's a rough price range for the 1899p? I know it's highly dependant on grade but what sort of prices do they normally achieve?

F is a fair grade for this..

Sovs have a more conservative grading scale applied to them than a lot of silver coins do.. as Gresham's law (Copernicus Law) dictates bad money drives out good.. so people hoarded sovs rather than "spending/circulating them" - hence them being more "common" in higher grades (much like commemorative Australian florins that were little circulated).

Still a nice coin to get.. all Australia Sovereigns are collected.. even in what is considered bullion grade as far as sovereigns go in price guide books.

Also bare in mind that AeL is using the commonwealth grading scale (as i do), which is far more conservative than US grading which typically overstates condition by 5-15%

FOOTNOTE: Gresham's law is an economic principle that states: "When a government overvalues one type of money and undervalues another, the undervalued money will leave the country or disappear from circulation into hoards
