Hi looking for any info on 1885 sovereign with jubilee head, have been told it is a fake but it checks out re weight size etc. It should have a young Victoria head , any assistance would be appreciated.

Yea, I will try to post a pic, will take some time to photograph etc. I can tell you that there is no mint mark, so must be London mint ( if real) it is dragon type ,not shield. Bought it from local dealer who says he will refund me or swap for another coin.

I'm going for a real sovereign. There appears to be the right level of detail in the horse tail, horse body, dragon, etc ... in the couple of jeweller's copies I have seen, that level of detail hasn't been there.

I am also happy to be told I am wrong, by those who know much more on these issues than me. If it is a fake, it would be great to hear what the obvious features were that identified it as such.

Thanks for comments guys, Ross your coin looks like the real deal, it has the correct head and is "upside down" to the opposing side as it should be, check out weight and size just to be on the safe side.

Some other imfornation about my coin that you may not be able to tell from the photos, it has no B.P. beside the date which is not unusal but it does have j.e.b. under victoria in the correct position.

Photos are about the best quality that I can manage, wil try to improve but can't promise success.

I checked my copy of Marsh.
No mint mark does mean London.
Mintage for 1885 only 717,723 so categorised as scarce.
That in itself triggers caution !
According to Marsh this coin should have a reverse axis and looking at your pictures this might not be the case.
Also, it should have the B.P. mark right of the date.
First assumption is it is a fake but you need to get this checked by a professional or for the benefit of doubt get your money refunded and buy another sovereign.

What got me is there doesn't seem to be enough detail & it's all uniform ,I still think it's a jewellers copy .

Jubilee Heads were first minted in 1887 and not 1885.

That's a bad sign for yours.

Agree I checked all Australian and European references and correct, nothing before 1885 :(

So Jewelers copy at best, complete fake at worst.

This is the Great Britain details FYI
