Even when they made profits they still didnt pay dividends. Alan joyce will still get his fat paycheck. Would rather see them sold off than bailed out by the tax payer.
Absolutely no surprise. Joyce warned of this during the 2011 lock out. Unions accused him of BS'ing, yet if anyone had looked at their financial reports, they had a ROE of around %3 at best at the time - they were slowly going under. Now they are under. As far as Joyce's pay cheque - IMO he deserves it. No other recent CEO of any Australian listed company has had the balls like Joyce.
I just think airlines in general are a crap business to try and turn a profit in. High costs, plenty of regulations, lots of competiton both internationally and domestically, sensitive to currency exchange rates. As a share investor I don't find anything attractive about airline companies.
I own a number of micro cap and mid cap shares that pay no or a very low dividends but I expect the companies share price to grow. Qantas isn't going anywhere

Qantas is a "sheltered workshop". I'm not sure our society or our mental health facilities can handle 1000 ex-Qantas workers wandering the streets and parks.
It's not a "war" as such, but many other countries view airlines as critical, nationally significant infrastructure and they're happy to hold equity and/or provide concessions. They basically treat them similarly to trains and buses because they figure it's important for people to be able to travel around for a reasonable cost because there is a higher overall benefit to the economy than if everyone were paying the full, unsubsidized cost.
It was only in the last 10years that the management of QANTAS recommended to shareholders to accept a $15 billion offer from a hedge fund.. Shareholders VOTED NO. QANTAS would have folded by now if that hedge fund got ownership. Shareholders would have had the cash to go out and buy Virgin. Regards Errol 43
I'm not so sure Mr Joyce was referring to airlines originating in any socialist countries. More likely he is referring to the airlines of the oil sheikdoms like Emirates and Etihad, or the city/company/state of Singapore, that have been competing so heavily with Qantas on international routes. Some interesting perspectives about the ability of those "states" to sustain national airlines: - Singapore - population of 5.4M - Emirate of Dubai - population of 2.1M - Emirate of Abu Dhabi - 0.6M Whatever is going on to allow those "countries" to sustain their airlines, they are not relying on the taxes of their respective populations to sustain them. Singapore has a top personal tax rate of 20% and I believe there is no income tax in the UAE.
