A HIKER in Israel has found a rare, 2000-year-old coin bearing the image of Emperor Augustus that is identical to one in the British Museum's collection

Laurie Rimon was hiking with friends at an archaeological site in the eastern Galilee when she saw a shiny object in the grass. After realising it was a coin, the group's guide, Irit Zuk-Kovacsi contacted the Israel Antiquities Authority. Within hours, an IAA representative joined the group of hikers in the field and took possession of it.

"It was not easy parting with the coin," Rimon said. "After all, it is not every day one discovers such an amazing object, but I hope I will see it displayed in a museum in the near future."

It was quickly determined this was not just any coin. It dates to 107AD and was part of a series of nostalgic coins that Emperor Trajan minted and dedicated to the Roman emperors that ruled before him.

The only other coin of this kind is believed to be the one held by the British Museum.

But not if you tell anyone about it - then it is indeed fleet of foot, it would seem.

The honesty is inspirational , Not sure id have the will power .
Aside from that - I once was playing around with my dog in my yard , I saw my gold ring fall off my finger . I did not panic much cause I figured it's in the grass BUT sure enough I never found it GONE even with a metal detector
Did my dog eat it as it fell ? I always wonder !!
But how on earth does a gold coin - AS SUCH STAY THERE FOR 2000 YEARS ??

Wife had an aunt in the UK, she and a friend were hiking (pre WW2) in the woods somewhere and came across a small shallow stream.

Before them was a very battered Roman helmet, partly covered in the rocks.

    No idea of its fate.

If you find some old coins or other treasure and get to keep it, do you pay tax on it?

I'd be interested to know where she picked it up. How often do people lose a gold coin? What if there is a shipment of a hundred gold coins underneath the surface nearby? Maybe a caravan was attacked or something... this is such a crazy story because the coin should've been covered by hundreds of generations of dead vegetation. 107 AD is just a generation and a half after the time of Christ.

Lucky hiker. But only for a short while. Shouldn't she be rewarded to have found a rare 2000 year old gold coin? I can see that she sighed and just wished for the gold coin to appear in the museum.

Great story.... ancient coins are great to own if even only for their historic value.
