Had a bit of fun with scrap sterling jewelry pouring it into a bar. I'm pretty happy with the result considering it was a bit of a rough pour.

Not everyone can be experts. I've melted some canberra florins into bars as well, they were worn but still most likely had a higher resell value. Btw I was thinking, if jewellery were not damaged, you most likely could have sold it here at $1 a gram or maybe even more in ebay. Some of the heavier chains can fetch $2 a gram or more. The layering happens because the metal solidifies in the mold before more molten metal is poured over it (and the new metal is not hot enough to remelt the layer below). You need to preheat the mold to prevent this, and it will also help with the spotting on the bottom of the ingot. The "dross" is probably still mostly silver, it just solidified in the crucible because the top end was not hot enough to keep it molten.
