I know there was a thread about this some time ago but it got confusing and I never did work out exactly what Australian silver coins could be melted down.

So now some time has passed, maybe someone can come up with a straightforward answer or has found out 100% what can be done.

I just want to melt stuff to make bars of different purity.

Like 50% silver post '46 coins

    92.5% pre '46 coins

toned & damaged perth mint 1oz coins

Now I guess I could quietly melt these down and be done with it, but I want to post the process up on youtube, so if it's illegal it would only take one person to make an official complaint and the law would have no choice but to follow up on it.

Obviously I don't want to break the law but surely a pre or post 46' Australian Florin is fair game? I can't take it to a bank or spend it, so can I melt it?

In the mean time, I have posted a video on melting tinned copper braided wire from crt tv's which may give you think music until you can give me the answer to my melting question..

you can actually take florins etc to the bank and cash them in, from memory the going rate for a florin is 20c

also I dont see the point in this video at all -- even though I watched it.

you will get teh same amount for the metal scrap or in bar form why waste the time and energy costs to bar it.

well yes but I like to stack bars, not wire, it wouldn't be called stacking then, more like bundling

Just trade those coins for a bar somewhere.
Why would you want to make a bar of unknown purity? You'll be stuck with it forever.

Show a couple of New Zealand 50% coins and then melt the Australian ones off camera, who is going to know the difference and I doubt anyone in NZ is going to try to prosecute you in Australia.

I had a similar idea but...

I wanted to make it too complicated, i.e. get a 3D design such as a bar shape but with relief designs on each face, use a CNC machine to cut out a multi-part bar mold, assemble the bottom and sides of mold, pour in melted coins, repeat!

I figured that a 50% silver high relief bar in a collectible theme (dragon) would get more over spot than a load of dirty pre dec.

Most arguments go along the lines of...coins have an official government guarantee of purity, anything you make is not going to have that guarantee, so will be harder to shift.

Use some of the junk sterling jewelry that's been selling for spot on this site.
