I can find price charts for gold and silver but, for some reason, they run with a ludicrously-fine price axis, with changes of a few cents looking like enormous swings. Because I'm stacking for the long-term I only care if the price shifts more than say 2-3%. Is there a site that offers live charts with a price axis that I can tweak myself?

Not live charts, but if interested in up to date historical charts ....

You could try the free mode of stockcharts: http://stockcharts.com/freecharts/
You are limited to daily and weekly charts, and no more than 5 years of prices

You'd probably want the sharp charts style, select on the first page.
    Codes are: $silver, $gold, $plat

Lots can be customized from the grey menu below the chart frame.

On 'big charts' you can use the etfs for gold and silver as proxies:
    http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com
Select 'advanced chart' on top bar.
Codes are: slv and gld for US etfs
Codes are: au:etpmag and au:gold for Australian etfs

You can customise bigcharts, including chart size, from the side menu.

    Aud Gold etf, monthly

yes, that's the one I've been using. It's fine, but the price axis is too fine and so small, inconsequential movements (for my purposes) look like huge swings.
