Hi all, im new to this so wanting some advice, iv so far only been purchasing the 1g pamp gold bullion, im wanting to start buying larger sizes, which would more cost effective, 1/10 perth mint coins or 2.5g pamp bars?
I would suggest buying coins, even though they come at a higher premium. There is a chance these coins will have some numismatic (or collectible) value as they depict changing designs. One example would be the fractional pandas if you can afford them.
Out of those two options I'd concentrate on the fractional Perth Mint coins. 1/4 oz size is better than 1/10 in my opinion (both from an aesthetic and value for money point of view). In terms of which Perth Mint coins to buy, go for the Lunar series over the Kangaroos if they are the same price as each other. For some reason Roos don't seem to have much collectors' value. Also if you do decide to buy bars, why PAMP? The Perth Mint certicard gold bars will almost always be cheaper, and just as recognisable and trusted.
Keep your eyes open for bullion sovereigns (and half sovereigns) at low premiums (5% or less) Note that as they are 22 carat they attract GST from dealers, but usually not from private sales.
The premiums on the 1g and 1/10 are mental. I do have 1g Maples but the 1oz is much more sensible for resale and smaller premiums on 1oz. Obviously they're much more expensive but if you're able to I think that's the way to go.
+1, i almost exclusively only buy sovereigns for my gold. they are very well recognised coins. 0.2354oz of actual gold content. It's not a nice fraction of an oz because they were first produced with the intention of being a circulated coin. The modern gold sovereign has been produced and in circulation across the British Empire since since 1817. Fascinating coin with lots of history.
I have thought about this a lot myself. I haven't got gold yet but I'm 99% sure I will stick to 1oz and 1/4 oz coins when the time comes. 1oz for being cost effective and 1/4 oz for ease of resale in the event of $5k gold an oz. That's a problem I think I can handle
I gave up smoking six years ago and used the money to buy gold. I've stuck to perth mint lunars ( 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 2 oz) I've also stacked sovs. I gave up on bars don't know why I just like coins. No real reason I guess. My advice is the larger the coin the closer to spot you pay.
Impressed that you did something so productive while quitting. Good for you. I hope we go to the moon so you've improved your health Be your bank all in one move!
I take it you meant bars? I been buying kilo bars for while and one day while at GS I saw a nice luna kilo coin in glass cabinet for around $30 more then a bar so decided to grab one. No regrets and bought more later coz they look so much better then bars for just little more.
Only problem with kilo coins or any coin with a premium for that matter is you have to take care when storing them. No body likes a scratched up capsules so unless they are perfect in every way good luck trying to get your premium back if you have to sell in a hurry. I like bars because it doesn't matter how you treat them and if you have a decent stack they don't take as much room in your SDB as coins. Just my 2c SS77
