The U.S. Mint could stand to make a lot of profit from producing and marketing coins with iconic symbols like Star Trek on it. After all, Star Trek originated in the U.S. and probably not arguable is that the largest fan base for Star Trek is in the U.S.

I don't understand why the U.S. Mint doesn't seize opportunities like this. A well marketed series of .999 silver coins depicting such icons could conceivably introduce lots of people to the world of coins (would be good for the U.S. Mint) and possibly even a few to the world of precious metals.

Now unless there is some sort of draconian legislation that I'm not aware of which prevents the U.S. Mint from collaborating on occasion with other private businesses for special promotional coins, it seems like we have people with very little vision heading the U.S. Mint.

The Perth Mint seems light years ahead (pun not necessarily intended) of the U.S. Mint in regards to marketing savvy.

Even its neighbors to the north are much more market savvy than the U.S. Mint.... http://www.mint.ca/store/buy/star-trek_coins-cat1290023

It's not even the marketing, with the US Mint -- it's the awful designs..

Like they're still stuck in the 1980's or something.

    If it weren't for ASE's & a select handful of ATB's, I wouldn't even bother with them.

They want a strong seller? Let's start with something easy: 5-oz, 10-oz & kilo ASE's..

    Not rocket surgery, here...

These kind of coins would all need to be authorized by the Congress. The US Mint operates very differently from other mints esp. when it comes to silver coins. Other than eagles all other silver coins fall into commemorative program and only 2 are allowed by law each year.

you only have to look at what the US Gov. did to Norfed to see the mindset.

Yesterday I received my Star Trek 5oz high relief 50th anniversary silver coin. Looks good in hand. Mintage 800 (540 graded).
