Hey guys, As with last years newspaper subscription set there has been a link found that allows purchase of 1 set with free delivery. http://herald-sun-shop.myshopify.co...n-direct-subscriber-offer?variant=16983965889 Says 1 per customer so my entire family has ended up getting a set. Please let me know if you find any cheaper deals such as the teacher pack from last year. Cheers, Rob
I got the first coin (with the album) free with Sundays Telegraph and figured it might be worthwhile collecting. Was a bit shocked today when the 2nd coin cost an extra $3. If the 1st is free and the other 13 are $3 then it works out at $39 too so no discount there. But I did wonder whether anyone thinks the numismatic value of these coins would be worth it. Obviously there is no value in the metal.... ....or is this just another attempted commercialisation of an important day and the coins are practically junk?
Don't forget to take into account of the cost of buying the newspaper, unless you can cut out the tokens from work. Last year newspaper coin never really took off, apart from the "secret" $1 poppy that can be bought only with subscription. Heaps people miss out and somehow Downies get some in bulk and that also got sold out before the end of the day. There was a lot of discussion whether this year set will have "secret" coin...and if it does...this would be the one to get hold off. I collect this year coins just for fun, as I do go to my LPO/Newsagent anyway...and they were all excited about it...so might as well join them in!
As ashamed as I am to admit it, I normally buy the Telegraph daily anyway (for form study) so it's a sunk cost. Is this the set from last year :- http://www.downies.com/Royal-Austra...red-20c-Coin-Collection/6309/productview.aspx Do you remember how much it cost when it first came out last year? If it was $39 then an increase to $99 is a fair numismatic premium for 1 year, no?
Yeah, thats the one. I think it was the same deal, $3/coin with token from the paper. Its selling much less than $99 at the FB coin group (I found they are the most reliable way to tell the current market feel, as their buying and selling are very liquid/fast/quick and has a large member base). thats the Less desirable folder, as its only 14 slot. They gave another folder with 15 slot for the $1 poppy that you can buy with subscription, or if you lucky enough, from Downies. My guess like last year, most newsagent will sell the leftover coin at the end of 2 weeks and of there is no secret coin, than the key will be holding to the folders. Pm me if you want to know about the FB coin group.
Yep, definitely smelling like a scam to me at the moment. I bought my paper at 9:15am this morning and got the 2nd last coin. Apparently supply of the coins is being wound back/limited. Customers not happy and I'll definately be p1ssed if I collect half the set or more and can't complete it because the newsagents aren't supplied enough.
I am interested to know how much you guys think a set will actually appreciate in value? My actual cost would be about $80 once I factor in all the newspapers I have to buy as well as the coins.
Guys, just in case you are collecting multiple sets, a cheaper option would be to buy the Telegraph instead of the Australian. Should be able to make a set for $70 by buying a different paper.
I collected the coins each day and now have a full set. It was a major pain in the backside with frequent shortages in all newsagents in my area, but it's done. I won't be doing that again!
I subscribed to get this so I was fine with that hurdle. Now as soon as I get it I want to unsubscribe hehe
