Another milestone for the US Mint's most popular coin ever, the American Silver Eagle or ASE.....time to search for and buy some of the early 1980's issues. Also, interesting article here: http://www.coinweek.com/bullion-report/the-coin-analyst-the-american-silver-eagle-turns-30/ .
I have 2 complete sets and a few spares, well just waiting for my 2016,s Everytime I mention buying 80,s ase,s on here I am treated as a fool and shot down because ase,s are only worth just over spot so it doesnt matter what years you have or buy they are all worth the exact same except mint 1986 and mint 1988! I prefer ase,s pre 2008 when the U in united was still upper case, all ase,s after 2007 (accept a few cross overs) display the u in united as lower case, insignificant to most investor buyers but huge change to me as a collector. I am sure questions would be asked and interest held if all of a sudden otherbullion and proof coins started to display aUSTRALIA or cANADA or uNITED KINGDOM but uNITED STATES,no interest lol
Depends on: 1) what condition you are looking for 2) what you consider "reasonable" 3) whether you are interested in the bullion or the proof silver version .
If buying un circulated condition from a collector its almost irrelevant to use " what condition" unless buying an ase graded and slabbed by one of the "big 2" because the other 2 authorised grader slabbers are not recognized by coin collectors as good enough! this leaves self graded ase,s open to anything the seller "believes" or wants you to believe the condition is.
I wasn't pre-supposing that SilverPete wanted an uncirculated ASE. Some people like silver coins that are in circulated, somewhat rough condition. I am not one of those people, but such stackers do exist. That's why I asked about the condition he prefers. .
You would think the US Mint would issue some ASE 30th Anniversary collector sets this year but don't think I've seen any mention of it. US Mint loves them anniversaries. BTW the gold centennials from US Mint later this year seem to be highly anticipated.
I was thinking the same thing.....Especially when the 25th set sold out fast and is now more than double priced on various sites.
They will have the 'reedless' edges and edge lettering ASE proof and Unc coins at some point. That might be the extent of the celebration. http://www.coinnews.net/2015/12/07/30th-anniversary-edge-lettering-for-2016-american-silver-eagles/
