I recently obtained some silver Morgan dollars that were a bit dirty. At the suggestion of a friend, I soaked them in a bowl of warm water with a little dish soap. Some of the coins now have a dark discoloration where they overlapped with other coins. Any ideas what might have caused this?

i think the "dirty" on your coins might have been what they call toning. silver does it naturally over time. not sure how soaking in soapy water affects the process but i probably wouldn't mess with them anymore.

i recently posted a question about why one of my coins had a foggy appearance on the front. i wasn't really concerned about whether the coin was real, just curious at to what causes the foggy appearance.

i'm still waiting for an answer and will probably have to wait until i visit my local dealer.
