I want to buy my first gold bullion coin. Do most collectors prefer 22 Karat or do they prefer 24 Karat? I like the 22 Karat because it is more resistant but I also like the 24 Karat because it is truly pure gold. My choices are 22 K American Eagle, 22 K Krugerand, 24 K American Buffalo and 24 K Canadian Maple. Which is the most preferred in North America?

Well I see you are in Canada. Better stick to gold maples where it is recognized. American gold eagles and buffalos are recognized in US.

Buy whichever is closer to spot :)

Prefer 24 but really don't mind 22, which adds some nice variety.

My tiny Au stack gets put in air-tites, so metal softness isn't a concern for me..

I like 24k myself... But I don't mind any gold really, as long as the price is right.

24k means the spot price is accurate...

24k, due to the more favourable tax and customs treatment around the world.

I was reading an article today that 22K is more costly to make than 24K because of the blending of alloys that is required. One thing that has me puzzled is my local coin dealer who says that he will pay the same price for silver coins whether they are pristine or beat up but when it comes to gold coins the price is highly dependant on their condition. If thats the case, then I may as well get 24K because I wouldn't be playing with it even if it was 22K.

24k all the way. Just easier to deal in, spot price is spot price, Asians only want 24k. For that alone it's not worth considering 22k coins as part of your main stack.

Gold Eagles, Kruggerands and the like at 22k attract 10% GST here in Australia, and that money is gone as soon as you purchase it. So in that sense it breaks the #1 stacker rule - minimise your premiums.

I would only be looking at 22k or fractional silver if buying privately or bringing in from overseas as personal effects thus no GST payable. And yes a couple of gold eagles in your wallet would probably come in completely unnoticed.

When one limits oneself one must be prepared to accept they will miss opportunities.

    Depends.

No CGT on 22k Sovs in the UK, for example; and there's a lot history in those Sovs.
