Hi everyone, I just received a 1992 Kook in original square capsule I got off eBay today in the mail, and found a huge blue spot on the corner of the coin. Is this normal for such coins? Feels alarming that our semi numis can develop milk spots along with blue ink spots.
the edge... circles don't have corners. i've not seen it before... maybe it has had travels outside of the capsule at some stage?
No it wasn't. But the seller has offered to refund me so no issues there, though he said this was a common issue with Perth Mint (really?). Just disappointed really, and now afraid of it appearing on my other kooks or lunars.
haha my mind was probably confused with the square capsule. No idea why I would say corner as well now after having some time to calm down.
Doesn't look like toning... looks sorta like PVC plastic residue but not green enough My bet is it did not originate from the coin or atmosphere... but who knows
Do you own any of those coins? The square capsule coins does have a layer of lacquer on them. Over the years it came off. Some developed toning. That for being old. If you want good conditions buy the lastest coins. Imo
dropping nitric acid on it will show blue/black if it's NOT silver.. this washes off under the tap and will leave a white colourless burn in the coin, it wont stay blue/black like that.. Looks like toning to me.
I collect kooks as part of a full set. I accept that the older coins are not going to come in mint condition, but marks like these I find hard to accept personally. As a collector, it takes away from the aesthetic appeal, and makes it a lot harder to sell it off in the future shld I wish to. Unless people generally accept such marks on their semi numis coins.
This. Try finding a 1990 Kookaburra that's in its original capsule that's worth submitting for grading. Most are blue/black afflicted from being 25 years old in non-airtight capsules.
It depending on where the toning are. Toning Patina Looks good on some. Some looks Gun Metal colour which is desirable. Multi colours are good too. Pay good money for natural occurred @ the right places. Not all are bad. If you collects older bars then you will know what is going on. Toning are good to a certain extent.
hmmm, many are but not all. That kook would not be part of my collection. Yellowing I can accept, but not much more than that. There are good condition coins out there if you're willing to pay for them.
