Bought a couple of the silver shield coins a few years back. Got the first four in the series. Took a look on EBAY, Debt and Death selling for $40! This coin was hot in its day easily selling for $80... Duane really screwed up. Dissapointed.
That and excitement/care has died down significantly since its release. Happens with most new coin series but they would have held far more value if he hadn't gone and screwed it up. I sold a few of D&D for $120 but didn't bother with any after that.
How did he screw up? I don't have any. Yeah, those should be selling for the price of a round...which I think they are...I hope they are...all his fancy stuff should be about 1.00 over spot. Anything more, and you're getting hosed.
Damn , with that logic a lot of those "Chinese Medals" wouldn't be worth much at all, copper/brass spot is what?
Copper closed at $2.40 US per pound on Friday, or $5.28 per kilo (1000grams) but I see that APMEX is selling this 1000gm copper bullion bar for $64.99, so the copper medals should bring in that much, assuming they are of equal mass. I would pay that much if I liked the medal I suppose...shipping costs might be a bitch though... Cheers, Luker (tongue in cheek of course) Disclosure: I do own a few of the earlier Silver Shield Proofs (Mintages of 2500 to 3500 I believe) for which I paid $40 Canadian each , and that I still really like and plan to hold on to for some time.
I want one of these, but they are like $70 to $80 bucks.... makes a good banana squasher, sort of ...
I really should be say "I really screwed up" by not selling them. I see your point Barsenault, they are just rounds after all, however they were quite a limited mintage ~50,000 with a design that was very popular. It appeared at the time that his mint was going to be producing some amazing series. However then it became clear that he was flogging a dead horse after they started pushing out releases every month. And the Dramas with the Mulligan mint. Im glab I put the breaks on after freedom girl so it could have been worse, ill take it as a good lesson and move on.
Move on to what? This isn't the first time coins/rounds whatever go up in value only to fall in value later on, it happens to most coins actually if you wait long enough, with the flood of coins/rounds on the current market this will be common place. Pay your money and take your chances , doesn't matter if its the mulligan mint, the RCM / Royal mint/ US mint PM and a whole host of other start up mints. Maybe 1% of the coins are a "hit" or less, thats 99% of coins to lose money on, fun and games indeed. Goodluck in picking that 1%.
Pogs are much worst, at least with silver or gold the coin/round will be at min worth around spot. Pogs, not so much... a bit of press board worth nothing.
Hey Northern, That is exactly what I meant Take the lesson and move on. The lesson being that coins can go up while popular only to come down once the herd moves on. Hopefully I can pick it better next time.
Thank you Golden Chipmunk. I didn't have the right aged child in the mid 90's ... explains why I haven't heard of it.
Too many designs , I bought a few mid $30au to $40au but realized pretty quick that I was just paying a high premium for a silver round
